Those interested in international characters in general may also want to follow the Unicode Standard for multilingual characters. Unicode itself says nothing about fonts, but newer software may use Unicode as the underlying character codes for fonts, instead of the 7- or 8-bit codes used by older software. When preparing an online book, we suggest preparing it to be compatible with Unicode-based fonts, as we expect Unicode to be a more robust, long-lived character encoding than most other standards.
