Re: Why are we digitizing books?

A strange question given your subscription to this list. The Chilean
reference did not enlighten matters.

Of course, reading between the lines, the article about Chile concernsd the
value of books. Is the obscure message that maybe people in developing
countries are indulgent in being preoccupied with electronic texts when
people in countries like Chile can't even get basic texts let alone access
to computer technology?

I am not sure.

I know why I have been digitizing and editing texts. There is research
value in being able to efficiently cross-reference documents.

As for the political thing in Chile, perhaps they could make a compensation
claim with the CIA. The latter certainly could afford to stock a library.

I am not enthusiastic about the free-market idea of renting public library
books. What's free about it? Frankly, I am sick of the so called
free-market literature (using the term loosely) that clutters up my
mailbox. Or was it flee-market? Grabbing the money and running.

Cheers,
Chris.
