This is less radical than you think -- the same situation applies to a
letter that you write to a friend. You own the copyright; the friend
only owns the piece of paper, and can't make copies or republish it
without your permission.

Maybe museums will eventually realize that publishing a low-resolution
picture on the web is the same as allowing a small reproduction in
an art book. You'd think they'd have already figured this out...
