JACK LONDON (1876-1916).
Columbia Companion to the Twentieth-Century American Short Story. 2000, p341-345. 5p.
The article focuses on writer Jack London. Interest in the writings of Jack London is often inseparable from a fascination with his biography. Born in San Francisco on January 12, 1876, the illegitimate son of an itinerant astrologer, Jack London was raised by his hard-working but poor mother and stepfather, from whom he took the name London. He began his career almost exclusively as a writer of Klondike stories with a powerful Darwinian theme of man's limitations in the face of natural forces. In 1898 his first Klondike story, "To the Man on Trail," was published. The publication of his short novel, "The Call of the Wild," in 1903 made him world-famous. "To Build a Fire" is probably London's most famous and widely reprinted Klondike story.

JACK LONDON.
Research Guide to Biography & Criticism. 1985, Vol. 2, p734-737. 4p.
This article presents a biography of author Jack London. There is a dearth of biographical material written about London by writers drawing material in great part from London's published writings and newspaper accounts, such as Henry Mulford Tichenor's "Life of Jack London," Rose Wilder Lane's "He Was a Man" and Robert Barltrop's "Jack London." Georgia Loring Bamford's "The Mystery of Jack London," Joseph Noel's "Footloose in Arcadia," and William McDevitt's "Jack London as Poet and As Platform Man," while largely inaccurate, at least draw from personal knowledge of London and his friends, family, and acquaintances. Charmian London's "The Book of Jack London" (1921) on the other hand, tends to emphasize the personal life London led, in a sometimes sentimental, yet none-the-less mostly credible study of London's life.
