Photo is held in volume 1, page 65 of the Deparment of Capital Territory's "Pictorial Record of Canberra, 1951-1953" albums, negative number CU1430/2.,Joseph Benedict Chifley known as ôBenö Chifley (1885 û 1951) was Prime Minister from 1945 to 1949 and Leader of the Labour Party at the time of his death. His death from a heart attack occurred while the State Ball to celebrate 50 years of Federation was in progress. Prime Minister Menzies ended the ball with the announcement of Ben Chifley's death who had been working in his room at the Hotel Kurrajong instead of attending the celebrations. ,Prior to lying-in-State a service was conducted at St. Christopher's Church. This image depicts the sealed casket draped with an Australian Flag and guarded by representatives of the Services. Members of the public were invited to pay their respects by filing past the casket. The casket was then flown to Bathurst where the State funeral was conducted. ,Source - æSudden death in Canberra.
