Summary
"As a child, David Plowden was given an inexpensive box camera and before long he began to photograph railroad trains. As he matured and started on what would become a lifetime in photography, trains -- specifically steam locomotives -- continued to be one of his passions. But by the beginning of the 1960s they were eclipsed by diesel engines; the steam era had ended. It is our good fortune that Plowden was passionate about trains. For years he photographed not only the locomotives but all facets of the railroad world, from long steam-powered freight trains crisscrossing middle America to the yards, small stations, and industrial settings that are synonymous with trains. While his photographic love affair with America, and in particular the mid-West where he lives, resulted in many books and exhibitions of his beautiful documentary photographs, he never lost sight of the railroads, where his work would result in the images presented in this book, a reverent tribute and requiem for the

Summary
Through Dennis A. Livesey's camera lens, readers will experience the thrill of the steam railroad, a transportation system that dominated the USA for over 100 years and helped build a nation. In 131 photographs of Steamtown --a heritage railroad, see the billowing smoke and the flashing steel rods that turn enormous spoked wheels, hear the scream of the whistle, and listen as veteran railroaders share their stories and wisdom. Find out what it means to be in charge of the handbrake on a 400-passenger train as it begins a downhill descent. This book goes beyond train hardware and history, sharing stories so that those outside the railfan community can appreciate the importance of preserving this part of our history.

Summary
"This rare archive steam footage was lovingly captured on 16mm film by the famous American railroad enthusiast, Harry P. Dodge. Along with the rest of the series, it provides the unique and incredible story of the world's railways in the '60s and early '70s. In this program, Harry has captured the incredible variety of Asian steam, commencing in India with Bengali broad and narrow gauge steam engines, the exquisite Darjeeling Railway, Jaipur's meter gauge system, and locomotives ranging from the Pacific to a Maharajah's private train. This is contrasted with Japanese preserved steam, the wood burning locos of Thailand, Indonesian tank engines and Malaysian light steam, while in Australia and New Zealand we find an equally delightful assortment of gauges and rolling stock."--Container.
