In the introduction, Christopher Skinner suggests that this stage of scholarship resulted from a "restricted definition" of what constitutes ethical material-a wrong-headed definition based exclusively on the letters of Paul and on Jesus's teaching in Matthew and Luke-as well as "limited imagination" (p. xviii) in reading the Fourth Gospel. Senior Johannine scholar Francis Moloney offers his thoughts on God, eschatology, and "this world" ethics in John, showing that John's realized eschatology in the "in-between time" of life in this world is to be a life of loving one another "in actions that reflect ... trust in the ultimate victory of God in and through the death and resurrection of Jesus" (p. 217). The third part of the book, "Moving Forward" (pp. 221-86), presents Lindsey Trozzo's work on Johannine ethics in light of John's literary genre, comparing it to the bios genre of Plutarch's Lives and inviting us to consider the ethics implied "by attending to the rhetorical exchange between the author [of John's Gospel] and the audience" (p. 238). Here Montaigne suggests that such metaphors and their determining social contexts make a difference: the difference between the slave household and the modern household of servants who are still in part feudal retainers and subject to domestic punishment, but who are the owners, nonetheless, of their bodies and labor.10 In the slave society of Plutarch's classical antiquity, the government of the self takes the form of the master reason suppressing and making slaves of the passions whose revolt it fears. In the essayist's society of wage-earning servants, the management of the self is a more relaxed affair of give and take between reason and the passions who seek mutual benefits, where reason makes calculated, cost-benefit choices that acknowledge the interests of the whole self.11 Built along the model of the slaveholder, the ancient philosophical self cannot let its guard down, and its pursuit of inner constancy isolates it from others and from fellow feeling-to the verge of paranoia.12 Located in relations of economic exchange and interdependence, Montaigne's self makes one moral compromise or bargain after another precisely because it acknowledges other selves on which its actions have effects, and the calculation of those effects becomes a determining factor of ethical choice.13 In place of the goal of self-mastery, Montaigne makes moral deals with himself in order to deal morally with others: it is an ethics for his modern times. This article examines a central narrative and ethical motif of Edmund Spenser’sFaerie Queene —the golden chain—in the context of Spenser’s broader debts to Homeric epic. While largely neglected in favor of more immediate sources, such as Virgil’sAeneidand Tasso’sGerusalemme Liberata, the influence of Homer’sIliadandOdysseyis profoundly felt in Spenser’s mythography of strife. In its representation of the consequences of cosmological and spiritual strife,The Faerie Queenerealizes the classical and late antique allegorical tradition of interpreting Homeric epic as illustrative of the doctrines of pre-Socratic philosophers such as Heraclitus and Empedocles. Its moral landscape structured according to the oppositional yet complementary forces of love and strife, Spenser’s epic enacts the Homeric-Empedoclean epic of the allegorists so as to offer its own etiology of discord, one sympathetic with, but also distinct from, that of Homer.
