      Piggott talks about the book-covers of Thomas Sturge Moore designed for W B Yeats which evolved from his own rich creative life as poet and artist and from what he learned from the revival of wood-engraving and book-design in the 1890s. Moore made two kinds of designs for Yeats: wood-engraved emblems for title-pages and colophons, and cover designs for blocking on cloth-bindings. In 1915 he cut the first of three devices for the private press that Yeats helped his sisters set up outside Dublin, the Cuala Press. Yeats told Moore his design was "most rich, grave and beautiful" and "admirably like the place." Moore, presumably recalling Axel and Vale Press days, wrote back saying it would look well on white vellum for an edition deluxe. Read less
