The name poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide, doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue, which is presumably why Dupont gave it the much cooler commercial name of Kevlar. Kevlar was invented by Stephanie Louise Kwolek (1923–2014) and Paul Wintrop Morgan (1911–1992) at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company for which US patent 3287323A “Process for the production of a highly orientable, crystallizable, filament forming polyamide” was awarded in 1966. It is produced by the condensation reaction between 1,4-phenylene-diamine and terephthaloyl chloride: the condensate, that is the chemical left over from the reaction, is hydrochloric acid. Mechanical drawing of the product produces Kevlar fibers. Kevlar can be considered one of a family of aromatic polyamide, which is usually contracted to “aramid”, fibers that include Nomex, Technora, Teijinconex and Twaron. Read less
