The hitherto unpublished bronze statue of a seated male was unearthed in the summer of 1996 at Tel Hazor, situated in Israel's Upper Galilee region. Here, Ornan discusses the dress and accessories of the statue and makes some suggestions as to its date and identification. While analyzing these aspects, he looks at the complex reciprocal relations between Canaan and New Kingdom Egypt, which enable him to propose a date for the manufacture of the statue. Although the biblical record does not contain definitive indications that Assyrian influences were present, many scholars have been suspicious of its perspective because of the culturally pluralistic atmosphere that developed under Assyrian aegis. Turning to the temple at Ekron, after discussing its date and archaeological context, Morrow examines evidence for Assyrian cultic influences on this building and associated material and textual remains. He concludes by suggesting how the data from Ekron might contribute to the debate as to whether there were Assyrian influences on the Jerusalem temple in the days of Manasseh. Read less

The two collections of texts generally characterized as “prophetic” from eighteenth-century Mari and seventh-century Nineveh have greatly energized the study of Old Testament prophecy during the past several decades. The texts, principally oracle reports but also including some others that refer to prophets and their activities, number about 130. Mari supplies almost twothirds of the actual oracles, while Nineveh has more in the category “texts relating to prophecy.”¹ Together these two collections represent the bulk of the ancient Near Eastern (non-Israelite) textual evidence relating to prophecy. The combined evidence of Eshnunna, Byblos, Hamath, Deir ʿAlla, and even Ugarit, is tiny Read less
