   This paper investigates the relationship between oil prices and exchange rates in three African countries using a Vector AutoRegressive (VAR) model. We use daily data on nominal exchange rates, oil prices and short term interbank interest rates from 01/12/2003 to 02/07/2014. The results suggest that the exchange rate of the three selected countries behavior is different in the event of an oil price shock, not only before and after the oil peak of July of 2008, but also between each other. Therefore, no general rule can be made for net oil importing sub-Saharan countries, such as Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. We conclude that after an oil price peak, the Botswanan pula clearly appreciates against the US dollar, the Kenyan and Tanzanian shilling. Read less

   Purpose The purpose of this paper is to establish the level of usage of e-services (websites and e-mail) by Botswana Public Officers Medical Aid Scheme (BPOMAS) and PULA Medical Aid (PULA) customers; the level of satisfaction; perceived value; and benefits derived from the website and e-mail services. Design/methodology/approach In total, 200 BPOMAS members and 100 PULA members were sampled. Systematic sampling technique was used to select the participants. A questionnaire mainly guided by the E-S-QUAL and E-RecS-QUAL scales was designed to gain an in-depth understanding of customers’ perceptions and experiences of e-service quality. Findings It was established that there is a positive and significant relationship between the usage of e-services and benefits derived from e-services and between the usage of e-services and satisfaction. In addition, a nexus of relationship was observed between perceived value of the e-services and satisfaction. Research limitations/implications The management of healthcare services in Botswana needs to understand customers’ value perceptions of e-services and e-service quality in order to establish where to make the most of their efforts. Practical implications The managers of healthcare insurance providers should consider stepping up e-service usage and satisfaction levels, supported by client-centred training programmes, to assist clinicians deliver care to the expectation of patients. Originality/value There is an acute lack of research in the Botswana context, particularly into the link between e-service usage and satisfaction in the health insurance industry. This paper contributes to the extant literature by elucidating the nexus of relationship between e-service usage and satisfaction in Botswana. Read less

   This paper investigates the use of charges and standards in dealing with a common externality, plastic litter from shopping bags in Botswana. The country passed a plastic bag legislation (effective 2007) to curb the plastic bag demand. Uniquely, the act does not stipulate the amount that the retailers had to charge for plastic bags, they, independently from one another, set different prices. We assessed the environmental effectiveness and efficiency of the plastic bag legislation by analysing consumers' sensitivity to the improvement of the plastic bag and related price charges. The introduction of the plastic bag legislation led to a significant decline in the consumption of plastic bags per 1,000 Botswana pulas of shopping. The partial success of the charges levied in Botswana was due to the constantly high prices of the bags. Read less
