The Works of Edgar Allan Poe
2013
It is virtually impossible to overstate Edgar Allan Poe's importance in the field of American literature. He is credited not only with inventing or significantly advancing the short story, detective fiction, and science fiction, but also with being one of the first Americans to pursue a career in writing as a vocation. This comprehensive volume is a career-spanning collection of Poe's stories and poems.

The Appropriation of Edgar Allan Poe's Poetry in Cassandra Clare's Trilogy The Dark Artifices.
Journal of Artistic Creation Jun2023, Vol. 11 Issue 1, p1-11, 12p
The present paper examines how Cassandra Clare uses Edgar Allan Poe's work to create her own stories in The Dark Artifices saga. She published this trilogy between 2016 and 2018 and used three of Poe's poems as the main source of inspiration for each novel. The first one, Lady Midnight, is based on "Annabel Lee"; the second one, Lord of Shadows, draws from "Dreamland"; and the last one, Queen of Air and Darkness, has "The City in the Sea" as inspiration. Clare uses Poe's poetry both directly as chapter titles, indirectly in the plot, and, in the case of the second and third book, as an introduction to the novel. Furthermore, she uses gothic aesthetics and concepts to make a connection with the American writer. The analysis is approached from a theoretical framework based on Julie Sanders' Adaptation and Appropriation, and Genette's theory of transtextuality. It will analyze how this saga engages with Poe's ideas and aesthetic in this young-adult fantasy story in order to assess whether this new approach to the Gothic is an appropriation of Poe's work, and how it is achieved. Hellenic references in Edgar Allan Poe's critique on contemporary society.
International Journal of English Studies. 2016, Vol. 16 Issue 2, p45-59. 15p.
Edgar Allan Poe's bicentenary triggered new translations and research on his life and works. Studies have been conducted by several noteworthy scholars such as Silverman (1991) and Peeples (1998 and 2004) indicating that the selected tales in this essay are Poe's political message to the society of his time. The presence of Latin and Hellenic phrases and names in Poe's critique has been indicated in the past. However, despite the existence of numerous analyses with respect to the Latin motifs in Poe's narratives, even in Lois Vines' Poe Abroad (1999) there has been no research dedicated to the apparent presence of Hellenic references in Poe's works. Moreover, a methodic study devoted to the presence of the Hellenic domain in Poe's storytelling has never been undertaken. Presenting promismcging evidence for an extensive study, I aim to delve into these references and identify the reasons why Poe turned to Greece as a source of inspiration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Edgar Allan Poe, Eureka, and Scientific Imagination
2016
Silver Winner, 2017 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards in the Philosophy categoryIn 1848, almost a year and a half before Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of forty, his book Eureka was published. In it, he weaved together his scientific speculations about the universe with his own literary theory, theology, and philosophy of science. Although Poe himself considered it to be his magnum opus, Eureka has mostly been overlooked or underappreciated, sometimes even to the point of being thought an elaborate hoax. Remarkably, however, in Eureka Poe anticipated at least nine major theories and developments in twentieth-century science, including the Big Bang theory, multiverse theory, and the solution to Olbers'paradox. In this book—the first devoted specifically to Poe's science side—David N. Stamos, a philosopher of science, combines scientific background with analysis of Poe's life and work to highlight the creative and scientific achievements of this text. He examines Poe's literary theory, theology, and intellectual development, and then compares Poe's understanding of science with that of scientists and philosophers from his own time to the present. Next, Stamos pieces together and clarifies Poe's theory of scientific imagination, which he then attempts to update and defend by providing numerous case studies of eureka moments in modern science and by seeking insights from comparative biography and psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and evolution.
