The Short Stories Of Edgar Allan Poe Vol. 1

The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe . Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe ) was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 19th 1809 and was orphaned at an early age. Taken in by the Allan family his education was cut short by lack of money and he went to the military academy West Point where he failed to become an officer. His early literary works were poetic but he quickly turned to prose. He worked for several magazines and journals until in January 1845 The Raven was published and became an instant classic. Thereafter followed the works for which he is now so rightly famed as a master of the mysterious and macabre. In this volume we bring you some of his less well known, but just as chilling, stories, Poe died at the early age of 40 in 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Many of these stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth. The present article deals with the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe . It is an attempt at analyzing Poe ’s personality and works in the light of his personal experiences, particularly the tragic events that can account for most of the negative opinions associated with his name. This paper looks at the American poet, writer and literary critic from the point of view of his greatest, most famous creations reflecting his authentic self. While considering all the negative factors his lifestyle and activity were largely conditioned by, the focus is made on Poe ’s genius, his deserts and his role in the development of different literary genres and enrichment of world literature. Balancing Between Sensitization and Repression: The Role of Opium in the Life and Art of Edgar Allan Poe and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The creative process contains both conscious and unconscious work . Therefore, artists have to face their unconscious processes and work with emotional material that is difficult to keep under control in the course of artistic creation. Bringing these contents of consciousness to the surface needs special sensitivity and special control functions while working with them. Considering these mechanisms, psychoactive substance can serve a double function in the case of artists. On the one hand, chemical substances may enhance the artists' sensitivity. On the other hand, they can help moderate the hypersensitivity and repress extreme emotions and burdensome contents of consciousness. The authors posit how the use of opiates could have influenced the life and creative work of Edgar Allan Poe and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
