Spatial analysis of environmental factors influencing dust sources in the east of Iran using a new activelearning approach.
Geocarto International; 2022, Vol. 37 Issue 26, p11929-11954, 26p
The frequency and intensity of dust storms in Iran has increased significantly in recent years. This study identifies the sources of dust using hybrid algorithms – probability density-index of entropy (PD-IOE), probability density-radial basic function neural network (PD-RBFNN), probability density-self-organizing map (PDSOM), and probability density-fuzzy ARTMAP (PD-FAM). Hybrid models employed several effective environmental factors: land cover, slope, soil, land use, wind speed, geology, temperature, and precipitation. A random selection of 70% of the data points were used for training the spatial models and the remainder (30%) were used to test the effectiveness of the models to determine the best algorithm. The results reveal that the PD-FAM algorithm produced the most accurate predictions of dust sources. Geology, slope, and soil were the factors that were most effective predictors of dust generation in eastern Iran. Comprehensive management is needed to manage dust production in Iran and these findings may ease identification of locations most likely to produce dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exhibiting the Past : Public Histories of Education
2022; Vol. 00001
Gradually the historians of education have broken out of the traditional school museums — which are no longer the sole places to communicate research findings with the wider public — and gone beyond the traditional publication formats. Indeed, they started exploring how to work with the [educational] past in the present, experimenting with presenting the educational past in new ways, and reflecting on how these new forms of mediation and musealisation of sources impacts the research and the (hi)stories told. By zooming in on three themes, musealisation, new ways of exhibiting, and historical storytelling —, this edited volume illustrates the vitality of the history of education, as field of study, and demonstrates its adaptability to the “changing contexts” of its public function. So, rather than being an “endangered species”, the historians of education seem to get fit for the future by showing traditional craftsmanship as well as “engagement with” and “appropriation of” (interdisciplinary) approaches of thinking with the past in the present for wider audiences — stances which are richly illustrated in the various contributions.

Central and Eastern European Literary Theory and the West
2022
Literary theory flourished in Central and Eastern Europe throughout the twentieth century, but its relation to Western literary scholarship is complex. This book sheds light on the entangled histories of exchange and influence both within the region known as Central and Eastern Europe, and between the region and the West. The exchange of ideas between scholars in the East and West was facilitated by both personal and institutional relations, both official and informal encounters. For the longest time, however, intellectual exchange was thwarted by political tensions that led to large parts of Central and Eastern Europe being isolated from the West. A few literary theories nevertheless made it into Western scholarly discourses via exiled scholars. Some of these scholars, such as Mikhail Bakhtin, become widely known in the West and their thought was transposed onto new, Western cultural contexts; others, such as Ol'ga Freidenberg, were barely noticed outside of Russian and Poland. This volume draws attention to the schools, circles, and concepts that shaped the development of theory in Central and Eastern Europe as well as the histoire croisée – the history of translations, transformations, and migrations – that conditioned its relationship with the West.

The Civilising Offensive : Social and Educational Reform in 19th-century Belgium
2019; Vol. 00001
'This volume offers a multifaceted selection of studies on 19th-century Belgian reformers and initiatives they instigated to solve the ‘social question'by ‘civilising'and moralising the lower classes. Around 1850 Belgium was continental Europe's most heavily industrialised state. From the mid-century until the Belle Époque many international social reform associations were based in Belgium, as well as their main international actors. This book aims to place the history of social, moral and educational reform in Belgium during the long 19th century within a broader European perspective. This collection of contributions by both young and established scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds not only fills some gaps in Belgian historiography, but also offers a better understanding of broad epochal processes such as the bourgeois civilising offensive, the expansion of educational action and the historical growth of welfare states.
