Schreiben im Zwiegespräch / Writing as Dialogue : Praktiken des Mentorats und Lektorats in der zeitgenössischen Literatur / Practices of editors and mentors in contemporary literature
2019
Although practices of editing and mentoring are part of an author's daily activities, they have previously been largely neglected by the literary studies. The bilingual volume therefore assembles players from the fields of literary production and theories of authorship and the writing process, who discuss the development towards an opening up of the creative writing process. Their contributions encompass not only reports of experiences made by authors, editors, and mentors and insights into teaching methods applied in creative writing classes at higher education institutions in different European countries. They also explore theoretical approaches to an intersubjective literary practice as well as suggestions for the definition of a dialogic notion of literature in the age of online publishing.

Transferable skills and travelling theory in creative writing pedagogy.
New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice & Theory of Creative Writing. Feb2018, Vol. 15 Issue 1, p65-81. 17p.
A focus on skills that can be transferred and theory that can travel is shared by Creative Writing Studies (C.W.S) and a larger Writing Studies domain. I situate the Writing Studies reform movement, of which C.W.S is a part, as a response to ‘the permanent crisis of English studies’. The language of creative narrative gives C.W.S its legitimating foundation, I argue. By continuing to speak the language of creativity and resisting the ‘erotics of theory’, the emergent field can retail skills that can travel across and beyond academic disciplines. This essay draws on three years of utilising creative writing pedagogies in Puerto Rico. I sketch the emergence of C.W.S (2009–2017) as one version of the ‘disciplined interdisciplinarity’ which is characteristic of Writing Studies. I describe aself-characterisationassignment I have implemented in several writing studies courses. Within the context of the growing importance of non-academic genres, and recognition that creativity is an asset in all fields, I suggest that C.W.S is well situated to help Writing Studies fill a void produced by the crisis of English Studies. Reading as a Writer in Australia and China: Adapting the Workshop.
New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice & Theory of Creative Writing. 2014, Vol. 11 Issue 1, p77-91. 15p.
The Western writing craft workshop has been dominated by a narrow conception of ‘reading as a writer.’ An overview of Creative Writing as a discipline in Australia and China suggests that a broader conception of ‘reading as a writer’ would enrich teaching in both the Anglophone countries and Asia while it improves expression and enhances cultural understanding. A comparison of courses that focus on nonfiction at Flinders University in Australia and Sun Yat-sen University in China demonstrates how reading that takes into account a variety of subject aims and outcomes and reflects diverse cultural experiences can benefit native speakers, those who come from non-English speaking backgrounds and second-language learners. Sharing strategies to facilitate language learning and craft knowledge will improve expression and broaden cultural perspectives. In addition, the teaching of nonfiction, which must be pursued at a critical, craft and ethical level, highlights the social responsibility not only of professional writers who are studied but of apprentice writers as they work towards critical and creative competence. Toward a pedagogy of intentionality.
New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice & Theory of Creative Writing. May2022, Vol. 19 Issue 2, p185-195. 11p.
To challenge various faulty assumptions about prevailing creative writing pedagogies, we may start by theorising alternate ways to treat students' intentions with and for their creative work. A pedagogy focused on intentionality could stress the importance of inviting into the classroom students' lifeworlds over the importance of production and thus typified conceptions of 'professionalism', both of which are largely based on problematic ideologies of craft. Such a pedagogy may facilitate processes of self-expression and self-discovery that challenge the often-unnoticed shortcomings of current creative writing curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aesthetic tradition and the interdisciplinary field of creativity studies offer threshold concepts that can help us to reimagine what we teach in literary writing studies. This article points to what is left out of current discussions of ‘writing studies’ and articulates how creative writing pedagogy may be a nexus for the intersection of multiple frameworks for thinking about production. ‘An Extremely Pleasant New Kind of World’: Hughes Mearns and the Open-Access Approach to Creative Writing.
New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice & Theory of Creative Writing. 2013, Vol. 10 Issue 3, p348-358. 11p.
This article examines the pedagogy of Hughes Mearns, the arguable founder of academic creative writing in the United States in the 1930's and 1940's, in order to better understand issues of access and educational purpose for creative writing instruction. Mearns' belief in the imaginative ability of all students paralleled cultural messages at the time about the collective rather than selective ability of individuals to write creatively and the importance of providing individuals with creative writing instruction. The open-access view is evident in interdisciplinary approaches to creative writing including CWAC – or Writing Across the Curriculum initiatives that use creative genres to teach low- and high-stakes writing. Overall, the affirmative vision of creative writing as an academic pursuit that needs to be widely taught is a view that should remain central to the purpose of Creative Writing Studies. The Poet's Receptive Stance as an Invention Heuristic.
New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice & Theory of Creative Writing. 2011, Vol. 8 Issue 1, p13-24. 12p.
This study converges on the processes of creative writers, more specifically, the invention processes of several interviewed poets. These poets collectively describe an invention heuristic I name the 'receptive stance' - receptivity as differentiated from the deliberate deployment of craft for the sake of conscious, plotted invention. After establishing a working understanding of invention, I review the existing literature and my methodological positioning before detailing two aspects of the receptive stance: Evoking New Associations and From Craft to Instinct.
