Religious Individualisation : Historical Dimensions and Comparative Perspectives
2019
This volume brings together key findings of the long-term research project ‘Religious Individualisation in Historical Perspective'(Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, Erfurt University). Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios. Furthermore, the volume challenges prevalent views that regard religions primarily as collective phenomena and provides nuanced perspectives on the appropriation of religious agency, the pluralisation of religious options, dynamics of de-traditionalisation and privatisation, the development of elaborated notions of the self, the facilitation of religious deviance, and on the notion of dividuality.

Rohinton Mistry
2016
The award-winning novelist Rohinton Mistry is recognised as one of the most important contemporary writers of postcolonial literature. This study - the first of its kind - will provide scholars and students with an insight into the key features of Mistry's work. Peter Morey suggests how the author's writing can be read in terms of recent Indian political history, his native Zoroastrian culture and ethos, conventions of oral storytellling common to Persia and South Asia, and the experience of migration which now sees him living in Canada. The texts are viewed through the lens of diaspora and minority discourse theories to show how Mistry's writing is illustrative of marginal positions in relation to sanctioned national identities.

Filmische Poetiken der Schuld : Die audiovisuelle Anklage der Sinne als Modalität des Gemeinschaftsempfindens
2017; Vol. 00004

Orality and Textuality in the Iranian World : Patterns of Interaction Across the Centuries
2015; Vol. 00019
The volume demonstrates the cultural centrality of the oral tradition for Iranian studies. It contains contributions from scholars from various areas of Iranian and comparative studies, among which are the pre-Islamic Zoroastrian tradition with its wide network of influences in late antique Mesopotamia, notably among the Jewish milieu; classical Persian literature in its manifold genres; medieval Persian history; oral history; folklore and more. The essays in this collection embrace both the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods, both verbal and visual media, as well as various language communities (Middle Persian, Persian, Tajik, Dari) and geographical spaces (Greater Iran in pre-Islamic and Islamic medieval periods; Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan of modern times). Taken as a whole, the essays reveal the unique blending of oral and literate poetics in the texts or visual artefacts each author focuses upon, conceptualizing their interrelationship and function. Contributors are: Frantz Grenet, Jo-Ann Gross, Charles G. Häberl, Galit Hasan-Rokem, Reuven Kiperwasser, Ulrich Marzolph, Margaret A. Mills, Ravshan Rahmoni, Karl Reichl, Julia Rubanovich, Shaul Shaked, Raya Shani, Dan Y. Shapira, Maria E. Subtelny, Gabrielle R. van den Berg, Yuhan S.-D. Mute Dreams, Blind Owls & Dispersed Knowledges: Persian Poesis in the Transnational Circuitry. 2004, p370-393. 24p.
This article presents a final set of reflections on mute dreams, blind owls, and dispersed knowledge through the cover photograph of a young engineering student with a video camera. The cover photograph projected onto her black chador from a spotlight inside the Fukuoka sports dome, the tricolored logo of the 2002 Sixth Annual Robocup games. Let this stand as an icon for a reflection on the shifts beyond the mobile army of metaphors, and on the democratic and aesthetic forces of cultural critic pressing against the asceticism of the fundamentalists for an opening of the public sphere in both societies.

Constitutionalism as Discipline: Benegal Shiva Rao and the Forgotten Histories of the Indian Constitution.
South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies; Sep2018, Vol. 41 Issue 3, p605-620, 16p
Ironically, despite being acclaimed as one of the foremost biographers of the Indian Constitution, little is known about Benegal Shiva Rao (1891-1975) or his ideas about constitutionalism. By delving into Rao's published writings and his incomplete, unpublished autobiography, this essay reconstructs his idea of constitutionalism as one that primarily sought to discipline politics. However, I argue that such a view also leads to erasing the accounts of political conflict that comprise the history of the Indian Constitution. By analytically bringing together this curious triadic relationship between politics, constitutionalism and history, this essay explores how an isolated focus on constitutionalism leads to troubling historical amnesia. Zarathushtra in the Indian Underworld: An Ethnographical Study of a Persian Community in India. Part II.
Critique: Journal of Socialist Theory; Feb2014, Vol. 42 Issue 1, p87-105, 19p
This is the second part of the ethnographical study of the Parsis, a minority community of Persian descent living mainly in India. The second part in the study of this ethnographical study, concentrates on the Parsis' maintenance of their ethnicity, whilst also being pioneers of modernity in India. It takes up the issues of secularism and assimilation and the challenges that the Parsis face in a now increasing volatile political situation in South Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
