Perbandingan Sebutan Hibrid dalam Wacana Lisan Berskrip dan Wacana Lisan Spontan di Singapura: Analisis Fonetik
Jurnal Bahasa, Vol 23, Iss 2, Pp 259-288 (2023)

GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Nov2022, Vol. 22 Issue 4, p261-278. 18p.
Sites on social media have provided a platform whereby the young can create groups based on their common interests and build connections by updating various topics to discuss. However, with social media taking up such a large space in our lives, there is a concern as to whether it is impacting our communicative language; more importantly, our youth's communicative language. In view of this phenomenon, this study is an attempt to add to the understanding of online communicative language used by youths in social media. It is also to fill the research gap that exists in the field of research on language patterns used in academic settings among youth in online communication networks. Specifically, this article will report on the linguistic features of online communicative language used by youths in an academic setting on Facebook and determine whether the language patterns used are effective in conveying the relevant information. This study employed two research tools, namely Virtual Ethnography and Content Analysis. Data collected was in the form of screen captures and snippets of conversations. Content Analysis was employed to look into the occurrences of languages in contact in phenomena such as code-mixing, code-switching and borrowings of certain words from the first language to second language and vice versa. The findings of the study indicate that the language used by the participants on Facebook consists of a mixture of code switching, code mixing, fillers, emoticons, spelling modifications, foreign language words and colloquial Malaysian English. Penanda Pengemukaan Topik dalam Wacana Pedagogi: Satu Analisis Wacana Kritis.
GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. May2023, Vol. 23 Issue 2, p75-93. 19p.
Most past studies of pedagogical discourse on teacher teaching skills do not discuss the social practice of discourse based on the critical discourse analysis approach (AWK). The study aims to clarify the social practice of pedagogical discourse through the analysis of the markers of the delivery of topics in the interaction of teacher-students during micro-teaching activities. The topic delivery markers include paratone marker words as a marker of discourse and a teacher's question verses as a part of the topic control in the textual dimension of the pedagogical discourse. The study used data recording and transcription methods. The data were taken from a 30-minute video recording of each teaching and learning session during a micro-teaching activity involving 5 prospective teachers at a public university in Jakarta and real students from five secondary schools in Jakarta. This study applies to AWK Fairclough (2013). The analysis focuses on the paratone marker words and type of teacher question verse. This study found that teachers used 146 words of paratone markers 'nah', 'ya', 'baik/baiklah', 'silakan', 'sekarang', 'lalu', 'anak-anak/anakanakku', 'assalamualaikum/selamat pagi/sore', 'selanjutnya', 'coba', 'yang pertama/kedua/ketiga', 'Alhamdulillah', 'bagaimana', 'wah', 'jadi', 'ayo', 'kalian', 'ohya nak', and 'tolong' at the beginning of the movement as a way of summing up new topics. There are 125 questions of teachers becoming movements either as topic markers or after the paratone marker words are approved. The type of teacher's question verse is an open-closed; and informativeaffirmative question verse. This study contains the social practice of equality of teacher-students dominance in the classroom. Teachers consider students to be subjects who have the right to be respected through the selection of paratone marker words that indicate an effect, such as 'please', 'please', 'try', and '--kah' particle as well as a positive an acknowledgment of the student's response. This is contrary to the sociocultural practice of pedagogy in Indonesia where power often belongs to teachers. In addition, the teacher in this study is still a prospective teacher so the students consider having a close relationship with their teacher. This study contributes to the quality of teaching and learning when students become teachers as well as providing linguistics input in the study of pedagogical discourse with the AWK approach. Lakuan Ilokusi dalam Kenyataan Perdana Menteri Singapura untuk Mengekang Penularan COVID-19
Jurnal Bahasa, Vol 22, Iss 1, Pp 77-104 (2022)

GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Nov2019, Vol. 19 Issue 4, p363-378. 16p.
This article examines the discourse markers iaitu in Malay and esto es in Spanish, in the discourse process called Paraphrastic Reformulation. The Paraphrastic Reformulation is a process of redefining a message or an idea that is considered vague, ambiguous, or inadequate. This process is evaluated based on the similarity inherent between the two connected segments. In this regard, the process of reformulation shows the effort and capability of an individual, wheather oral or non-verbal in selecting the linguistic formula that is deemed best to clarify the meaning conveyed (GarcƩs, 2008). This study was conducted by analyzing scholarly and scientific texts in Malay and Spanish. The findings show that both discourse markers studied, iaitu, and esto es have the same main function, namely, to explain the previously expressed idea. In addition, in terms of its distribution in discourse construction, the two discourse indicators iaitu and esto es are in the middle position, which is between the two connected segments. Covid-19 dalam Korpus Peristilahan Bahasa Melayu: Analisis Sosioterminologi.
GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Aug2020, Vol. 20 Issue 3, p221-241. 21p.
By the end of 2019, the people of Wuhan, China, has been plagued with a new outbreak that invaded the human respiratory system. However, the type of infection is different from influenza, avian flu, MERS-CoV or SARS. This new epidemic is known as the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV), later officially known as COVID-19. As a result of the spread of the disease, on March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention declared COVID-19 a pandemic. From the Linguistics perspective, this pandemic has rapidly germinated the corpus of the Malay vocabularies with the jargon and terms that relate to this virus crisis. For example, there are terms penjarakan sosial (social distancing), droplet, PPE, PKP and meratakan puncak lengkungan (flatten of the curve)'. There are even different terms that refer to a similar concept, such as nyahkuman and nyahvirus (for English term disinfection), and kadar peningkatan kes and lonjakan kes (for English term exponential spike). This may, of course, cause confusion for the user. Terminologically, the diversification of terms being coinaged needs to be taken into account to ensure that the terms are understood and used as these terms relate to the well-being of the community. In this regard, the study aims to analyse and describe the coinage of the terms related to COVID-19 that was initiated by the community. Working from the socioterminological framework, this study will use the Ministry of Health Malaysia press release texts issued from 16th January 2020 to 10th May 2020 as the data of the analysis. Then, the terms studied are compared to the terms in the DBP database, and the findings are analysed by using a socio-terminological approach. The results of the study recorded that 67.0% (96) terms used by the Ministry of Health Malaysia were already standardised by DBP. However, some terms are indeed new terms, their formation is compliant with the term formation guidelines, though not favourable among terminologists. Thus, the popular terms in usage among the community should be respected to ensure that the Malay language is constantly evolving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Literasi Kritikal Dalam Konteks Pendidikan Tinggi: Suara Dari Sebuah Bilik Darjah Di Malaysia.
GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. 2011, Vol. 11 Issue 2, p99-119. 21p.
The key thrust of the Malaysian Higher Education Action Plan (MoHE 2007a, 2007b) is to develop first class human capital for sustainable Higher Education in terms of employability and citizenship (Dam-Mieras, 2005; Ryden, 2005). Critical and independent thinking (MoHE, 2007a) is a vital attribute for first class human capital. This paper reports the preliminary findings of a research which examines the voices and experiences of postgraduate students from different linguistic backgrounds registered in a course which is committed to building situated critical literacy from the Critical Literacy Awareness (CLA) Instructional perspective and method. The conceptual framework aims to redefine the construction of meaning in terms of the intersecting and/or conflicting voices and discourses with respect to ideological perspective ideas on literacy and awareness of knowing (Wallace, 1988; Lankshear & McLaren, 1993; Kress, 2003; Koo Yew Lie, 2009). Using action research involving transcripts of teacher talk and student logs, this paper qualitatively analyzes a subject's reflections of her journeys through CLA Instructional pedagogy in a transnational Malaysian Higher education classroom. The use of multilayered codes (vernacular languages, dialects, registers) and diverse cultural resources in the subject's reflective logs demonstrates the complex ways in which hybrid texts are constructed based on the subject's various social locations. The teacher's deliberate engagement with the subject's positions is also seen as a contributory influence on the use of diversity for cultural meaning-making. The findings indicate that for it to be inclusive and transformative, teacher's talk and interventions through CLA pedagogy has to multiply and inter-culturally engage with student's language and cultural resources as variously valued in diverse context. Pengglotisan Geseran /s/ dalam Bahasa Kerinci.
GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Sep2014, Vol. 14 Issue 3, p225-242. 18p.
The aim of this article is to explain the changes of the alveolar fricative /s/ to the glottal fricative [h] in Kerinci. The existence of Kerinci-language in Malaysia is due to the mobility and migration of speakers who came from West Sumatra, Indonesia. Both Kerinci languages spoken in those two countries have different set of sound system. However, Kerinci phonological system in Malaysia has not been theoretically discussed. . The sample selected in the Kerinci Malay community in Kampung Sungai Lui, Hulu Langat are aged between 50 years and above. Data was obtained through observations and interviews. The recording was then transcribed for the purpose of analyzing and explaining the sound changes. The study employs the generative phonology framework to explain the changes of /s/ to [h]. The phonological processes does not only involve changes to segment /s/, but also affects precedeing vocal sounds such as /a, i, u/. The results showed that vowel /a, i, u/ that precedes the segment /s/ in Kerinci will experience a phonological process and produce a different surface from each other. The phonological processes involved are vocal raising rule that change /as/ to [Īµh] and vowel reduction rule that change /is/ to [Ʀh] and /us/ to [awh]. However, any changes require a description of the program formulas to describe the process that first occurs. The results show that the changes of segment /s/ to [h] only occur after the implementation of the rules that change the vowels in order to comply to the conditions specified on common stated rules. Sorotan Literatur Bersistematik: Interpretasi Partikel Wacana "Lah" dalam Ujaran Masyarakat Malaysia.
GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Feb2023, Vol. 23 Issue 1, p261-290. 30p.
The particle "lah" in the aspect of discourse is an affirmative word that has various roles in utterance. The term discourse particle is used to describe the existence of pragmatic interpretation through use in a particular context. The various interpretations of the discourse particle "lah" resulting from existing studies not only provide input related to its structure but also cause confusion regarding its use. In line with that, the need for research to compile the findings of previous studies should be implemented to synthesize the use of these discourse particles in terms of coverage of the debate, its form and function. The methodology of this study which is a Systematic Literature Review study is based on the PRISMA standard (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta Analysis). Three main databases were used namely Scopus, Dimensions and Google Scholar. This study used thematic analysis with the help of ATLAS.ti 23 software. Based on the analysis conducted, 102 interpretations of the discourse particle "lah" were coded. In addition, four main themes, namely Speaker Party, Social Identity and Genre Function can be produced to represent each interpretation. Based on this systematic literature review, the researcher was able to identify theoretical discussions related to the form and function of "lah" that could explain the role of these particles in communicative utterance. This study was carried out to investigate the language attitudes of the Chinese online community in Kuching, Sarawak. The varieties studied were Standard Mandarin, colloquial Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese. The instruments used for data collection consisted of matched-guise test (indirect method) and questionnaire (direct method). A total of 403 respondents took part in this survey. Results yielded from the matched-guise tests with supporting evidence from feedback through questionnaires suggest that social factors, namely age group and socioeconomic status do influence evaluations towards the varieties. Generally, Standard Mandarin and Cantonese were rated 'high' and 'positive' consistently for both the dimensions of status and solidarity, while the ratings for Hokkien and colloquial Mandarin were more prominent in the solidarity dimension. Dimensi: Journal of Architecture and Built Environment, Vol 35, Iss 1, Pp pp.73-79 (2007)
The development of the city has caused a great influence through the society and the children as the part of the society. The children activity in the city has caused spontaneous playing space in the public space and it is being called "the invisible playground." This phenomenon needs to be realized and needs to be adopted in design, so that it has not only brought negative impact to existence of the city public open space but in contrary it will bring positive influence to the public open space itself. Kata kunci: ruang publik, anak-anak, "the invisible playground"

Sebutan Johor-Riau dan Sebutan Baku dalam Konteks Identiti Masyarakat Melayu Singapura
Issues in Language Studies, Vol 8, Iss 2 (2019)

GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Jun2016, Vol. 16 Issue 2, p53-71. 19p.
This paper investigates the cognitive processes underlying death euphemisms used by the Sarawak Malay community. These euphemisms are polite forms of language used to replace those that are considered harsh or taboo, and inappropriate for direct speech. Through the use of death-related euphemisms, speakers are able to demonstrate politeness, thoughtfulness and awareness of others' feelings. This study, which adopts the perspective of cognitive semantics, uses the Conceptual Metaphor theoretical framework proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Several cognitive mechanisms were used to analyse the data such as image schema and conceptual metaphor. The data was collected through interviews, recordings and observations involving informants who were Malay speakers from Kuching, Sarawak. The analysis reveals that the conceptualisation of death euphemisms in Sarawak Malay speakers is based on the source-path-goal image schema, in addition to the conceptual metaphor DEATH IS A BETTER LOCATION, LIFE IS A JOURNEY, and DEATH IS A DEPARTURE [DEATH IS A JOURNEY]. In general, this study shows that the Malay culture and Islam have largely influenced the conceptualisation of death euphemisms in the Sarawak Malay community. This influence is observable through the use of soft expressions to show courtesy, in keeping with the Malay culture, which emphasizes politeness in communication. The reality of death for Muslims who will return to their Creator, Allah s.w.t., is also depicted in the euphemisms investigated. This linguistic study may serve as a reference for readers and researchers on the topic of Sarawak Malay euphemism, particularly in the field of cognitive semantics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interdiskursiviti dalam Perutusan Arahan Kerajaan Berkaitan COVID-19.
GEMA Online Journal of Language Studies. Nov2021, Vol. 21 Issue 4, p38-63. 26p.
Malaysia's Movement Control Order (MCO) has been enforced twice, on 18 March 2020 and 13 January 2021 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, both through speeches delivered on live telecast by its Prime Minister. While the speeches were aimed at informing the people of the order, it is anticipated that they contain interdiscursivity, that is a combination of discourse genres and styles, which carries out multiple functions in delivering messages pertaining to the order, based on political hegemony, ideology and culture. Prior to the announcement, the public is rife with questions and perceptions of what the MCO may involve. The speeches conveyed the Prime Minister's and the government's intentions such as delivering information, providing instruction, calming the people, and the like. Content analysis was conducted on two MCO speeches using qualitative approaches. The study is aimed at identifying functions and types of discourse, as well as deciphering techniques used to achieve the functions, using Idris Aman's (2006) discourse functions analysis framework. The study proposes interdiscursivity elements in the MCO texts, realised through five main functions of informing, providing understanding, presenting/defending opinions, expressing (one's views) and issuing orders. The study also found the use of three techniques additional to the existing framework, that of empathy, advice and appreciation. The study indicates that interdiscursivity is used in a text that contains a main objective for multiple purposes, which are determined by audience, environmental and situational factors. The presence of interdiscursivity also reflects the speaker's communication strategy, balancing between exhibiting sensitivity to public concerns and issuing the order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
