Blackwater Blues.
New Republic. 8/27/2008, Vol. 239 Issue 3, p7-8. 2p. 1 Color Photograph, 2 Illustrations.
The author of the article discusses Western security contractors involved in the Iraq war, comparing a 2005 trip to the Green Zone with one in 2008. The success of the surge and the alliance between U.S. armed forces and Sunni insurgents against Iraq's Al Qaeda has created a feeling of stability. But with these improvements, mercenaries have seen their fees drop dramatically.

Millennialism in the Mass Media: The Case of Soldier of Fortune Magazine.
Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. Dec92, Vol. 31 Issue 4, p408. 17p. 1 Chart.
This article presents arguments claiming that the periodical "Soldier of Fortune" can be read as an apocalyptic text which expresses a postmodern and secular form of the millennial myth. it is reported that the U.S.-led battle against so-called tyranny, or dictatorship, raged on at the 15th Anniversary Soldier of Fortune Convention and Exposition held in Las Vegas, Nevada, in September, 1990. The magazine and the subculture it represents is a postmodern expression of millenmalism which has surfaced in the U.S. in the final decades of the twentieth century. In the pages of the magazine, international conflict and the practice of survivalism are secular metaphors for the American millennial myth. Such metaphors, supposedly, allow subscribers to read into the confusing and rapidly changing events of the day their own often marginal social status and position. The millennial myth, reportedly, has been derived from ancient Hebrew and Christian apocalyptic literature concerning the ultimate destiny of the world and the cosmic cataclysm in which God destroys the ruling powers of evil and raises the righteous to life in a messianic kingdom.

Reports that the Supreme Court last week let stand a $4.3 million damage verdict against Robert Brown's magazine, `Soldier of Fortune,' because it ran a `Gun for Hire' classified ad in 1985. A reader hired the mercenary to kill a business partner. The victim's family sued; Brown's publication may go bankrupt.
