The Best Short Stories of [the Year], and the Yearbook of the American Short Story is the original title of an annually issued collection and bibliography of American short stories. It was originally published by Small, Maynard and Co. of Boston, and edited by Edward J. O'Brien; today it is published by Houghton Mifflin.
The Best Short Stories of [the Year], and the Yearbook of the American Short Story began publication with a collection and bibliography of 1915 short stories. The year being reviewed was included in the title of each volume, which typically was published the following year. Houghton Mifflin took over publication in 1933, and has published it ever since. O'Brien edited the annual for more than 25 years; others carried it on after his death in 1941, under the title "Best American Short Stories".
