Notes and Queries

Notes and Queries is a "medium of inter-communication" for "readers and writers, collectors and librarians", published in England since the mid-19th century. The focus is primarily on English language and literature.

Publication History

Notes and Queries began publication with the November 1849 issue. The numbering is a bit confusing, since it went through many "series" of volumes (usually 12 volumes per series). Frequency has varied from weekly to quarterly. The serial is now published by Oxford University Press.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1849-1922: Stephen Balbach has an index of all known online issues up to 1922 at Google Docs. The index links to various page-image editions scanned by Google or for the Internet Archive.
• 1849-1869: An archive at Oxford has page images for the first three series, and volumes 1-4 of the fourth series, independently scanned.
• 1849-1854: Project Gutenberg has transcriptions of many of the early issues now, and is working on producing more, based on the Oxford page images above.

• The official Notes and Queries Web site includes tables of contents for recent issues, as well as subscription, submission, and other background information.
