The Overland Monthly

The Overland Monthly was a California-based monthly magazine published in the 19th and 20th century. (There is a Wikipedia article about this serial.)

Publication History

The Overland Monthly began publication with the July 1868 issue, and continued until the end of 1875, when it suspended publication. The second series of this title began in 1883, succeeding The Californian (begun by the same publisher in 1880), and The Californian and Overland Monthly (renamed from The Californian in 1882). (We do not currently list those early 1880s predecessor titles.) In 1923 the magazine merged with Out West to become Overland Monthly and Out West Magazine.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1868-1923: HathiTrust has all 15 volumes of the first series, and all 80 volumes of the second series, along with some issues of its successor, scanned from various sources. The order of issue listings may be somewhat random.
• 1868-1900: An archive at Michigan has what appears to be the full run of the magazine's first incarnation, and the magazine's second series from 1883 through 1900.
• 1868: The Internet Archive has volume 1 of the first series, covering July through December 1868.
• 1869: The Internet Archive has volume 2 of the first series, covering January through June 1869, in a reprint edition.
• 1869: The Internet Archive has volume 3 of the first series, covering July through December 1869.
• 1870: The Internet Archive has volume 4 of the first series, covering January through June 1870.
• 1870: The Internet Archive has volume 5 of the first series, covering July through December 1870.
• 1871: The Internet Archive has volume 6 of the first series, covering January through June 1871.
• 1871: The Internet Archive has volume 7 of the first series, covering July through December 1871.
• 1872: The Internet Archive has volume 8 of the first series, covering January through June 1872, in a reprint edition.
• 1872: The Internet Archive has volume 9 of the first series, covering July through December 1872.
• 1873: The Internet Archive has volume 10 of the first series, covering January through June 1873.
