Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States
Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States is the official record of presidential messages, speeches, writings, and statements, published by the US Government Printing Office.
Publication History
Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States began publication in its current form in 1956, but retrospective volumes now go back as far as March 1929, the start of Herbert Hoover's administration.
Persistent Archives of Complete Issues
- 1929-2001: The American Presidency Project has a searchable archive of the papers from Hoover to the first 6 months of George W. Bush's presidency in 2001. (They may have added more since this summary was written.) They are provided in HTML format.
Official Site / Current Material
- GPO Access has the public papers from 1991 to the present. For recent years, you may need to select the "Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents" option, which is eventually compiled into the Public Papers volumes. The papers are provided in plain text and PDF.
Related Resources
- James Richardson's Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents has public papers, speeches, and other official writings of the early presidents. The edition currently online goes up to mid-1902. I do not yet know of comprehensive papers collections online for 1902-1929.
