Engineer for Duluth-Superior Harbor, who oversaw the replacement of wooden canal piers with concrete piers in 1897; he left a $20,000 trust fund for its upkeep; it holds a 9 inch refractive telescope with a focal length of 130 inches that weighs about 3,000 pounds with the 10 foot tall pier; it was built by W. M. Gaertner and Company for John Darling in 1917; the observatory was operated by UMD after 1964 and finally closed with the telescope relocated to UMD; fence; dome roof; stucco
