In 1837 Michigan established a Geological Survey. The survey was also called State Geological Survey, or Geological Survey and State Geologist. These names were used to refer to the state agency administering the survey, and the agency was also called (State) Geological Department. In 1869 a Board of Geological Survey was created. Variant names of this body include State Geological Board, State Board of Geological Survey, and State Geological and Biological Survey. In 1921 the board was replaced by the Geological Survey Division. In 1964 the division was replaced by the Geological Survey Section. In 1965 the section resumed the earlier name Geological Survey Division. In 1976 the name changed to Division of Geology and in 1977 once again reverted to Geological Survey Division.
