The missionary education curriculum had been hotly debated among African scholars. They argued that they taught subjects which subverted African indigenous knowledge and culture. Thus, in their haste to produce court clerks, interpreters and catechists, they produced alienated Africans who looked down on their culture and tradition as "barbaric and heathen." However, at the outset of the missionary educational establishment, the pioneer students were largely stigmatized. This was attributable to two factors: first, because the children sent out to study the ways of the white man were lazy. Second, many rich farmers sent out their slave's children to test the intention of the white men who largely subdued them through force of arms. The social ostracism suffered by these pioneers of western education in Onitsha Province is unknown in scholarship. It is this gap in scholarship that this paper intends to fill. Employing qualitative and quantitative methods of historical inquiry through the use of primary and extant secondary sources, the study interrogates the different problems and confrontations encountered by the missionaries during the British heydays in Onitsha. The paper will also examine the colonial schools and their contribution to the development of the present-day Onitsha megacity. The cultural imperialism theory of Herbert Schiller complemented by the social exclusion theory advanced by Rene Lenoir will be appropriated for this purpose. The research concludes that the physical and social stigma experienced by these pioneers later formed the bedrock of professional bodies in Onitsha urban city today. Read less

Many early records in West Africa arise from missionary accounts. While they may contain rich ethnographic data, this detail should be approached only after analysis and consideration of the authors of the sources in question. In early Sierra Leone, important data was recorded on behalf of the English evangelical Church Missionary Society, but the missionaries reporting on the ground comprised an insufficiently studied group of German-speaking Pietist Lutherans originating from central and northern Europe. This article analyzes the authors of this information in order to approach their accounts with a better appreciation of existing bias and to better engage with how diverse sociocultural perspectives affect the historical record. The Gothic Revival occupies a central place in the architectural development of the Church of England in the nineteenth century, both at home and abroad. Within the expanding British colonial world, in particular, the neo-Gothic church became a centrally important expression of both faith and identity throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. From a symbolic and communicative perspective, the style represented not only a visual link to Britain, but also the fundamental expression of the Church of England as an institution and of the culture of Englishness. As such, it carried with it a wide range of cultural implications that suited the needs of settler communities wishing to re-established their identity abroad. Expansion during this period, however, was not only limited to the growth of settler communities but was also reflected in growing Anglican missions to the non-Christian peoples of annexed territories. The two primary organs of the Church of England in the field, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) and the Church Missionary Society (CMS), actively employed the revived medieval style throughout the Empire as missions were solidified through infrastructure development. As a popular style with direct connotations to the Christian faith, revived medieval design became increasingly popular with Anglican missionaries abroad in the period between the early 1840s and the end of the century. Not only did its origins in ecclesiastical buildings make it attractive, but it was also stylistically distinctive, and set apart as a sacred style from both secular and ‘heathen’ structures.
