Discusses the effect of the American artist Joseph Pennell's (1869-1926) illustrations on interpretations of the travel book 'Castilian Days', published by the American politician John Hay. The author describes how the book served as a vehicle for Hay's views at a time of tension between the U.S.A. and Spain on its initial publication in 1871, and how a revised edition published after the Spanish-American War contained illustrations by Pennell. She argues that Pennell's illustrations had the effect of soothing the chauvinistic tone of the original publication. She describes Pennell's career, his position as a sought-after illustrator and his links to the Aesthetic Movement, analyses the style of the illustrations using 'The Palace of La Granja' (1903; illus.) as an example, and describes the subject matter and technique of several other images. Other artists mentioned are Bruce Rogers and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Read less
