In this open label trial, children aged 2 months to 12 years with uncomplicated severe anemia received immediate blood transfusion in the intervention group while in the control group, immediate transfusion was withheld. Children in the intervention group were further randomized to receive higher (30 mL/kg whole blood/ 15 mL/kg packed cells) or lower (20 mL/kg whole blood/ 10 mL/kg packed cells) volume, administered immediately after enrolment. Hemoglobin (Hb) was measured 8-hourly, and an additional transfusion using the original volume was given if the criteria for transfusion were met. For children requiring further transfusions, only 20 mL/kg whole blood (or 10 mL/kg packed cells) was used. In the control group, transfusion with 20 mL/kg of whole-blood equivalent was triggered by new signs of clinical severity or a drop in Hb to below 4 g/dL during 8-hourly monitoring, The primary out-come was 28-day mortality. Three other randomizations investigated transfusion volume, post-discharge supplementation with micronutrients, and post-discharge prophylaxis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Read less

Despite the salience of monitoring in self-regulated learning (SRL) and foreign and/or second language (L2) speech production in non-testing conditions, little is known about the metacognitive construct in testing contexts and its effects on learner performance. Given the reciprocal effects between L2 testing and L2 learning, a research effort in monitoring working in speaking tests, in particular computer-delivered integrated speaking tests, a testing format that has been advocated as an internal part of L2 classroom instruction and represents the future direction of L2 testing, is warranted. This study, therefore, serves as such an effort through investigating the use of monitoring by 95 Chinese English as foreign language (EFL) learners on a self-reported questionnaire after they performed three computer-delivered integrated speaking test tasks. Descriptive analysis followed by Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) testing reveals that monitoring was used in a high-frequency manner, but it exerted no substantial effects on learner performance. Primarily, the results are expected to provide pedagogical implications for SRL: while fostering self-regulating learners, especially self-monitoring L2 speakers, it is necessary for L2 teachers to purposefully reduplicate testing conditions in their classroom instructions for helping the self-regulating learners be equally self-regulating test-takers. Moreover, the results are hoped to offer some insights into L2 testing through the perspective of self-monitoring, one proposed component of strategic competence, a construct that has been extensively acknowledged to reflect the essence of L2 testing. Launched at the end of 2012, the Izborsky Club stands as a symbol of the ideological hardening of Vladimir Putin's third presidential mandate. This paper argues that for the first time, a large group of self‐identified nationalists or anti‐liberals has united under a single structure with the objective of influencing the authorities. The Club confirms the progressive structuring of a field of “think tanks” in Russia whose function is to occupy different ideological niches and offer a range of “products” that the authorities can sample, make official, or reject. This paper first explores the context of emergence of the Club, and maps its main figures, and their connections to higher decision‐making circles. Second, it investigates how the Club encapsulate its main ideological precepts–a reconciliation between Red and White, the imperial debate, and the economic aspect of Russian Great‐Powerness. Third, it briefly debates the successes and failures of the Club's positioning in Russia's contemporary ideological landscape. Read less
