The works of Baron de Montesquieu were decisively influenced by the sociocultural context in which they were written. Montesquieu owned several vineyards and was also a hereditary member of the French aristocracy, as the president of the highest court of the province of Guyenne, the Parlement de Bordeaux. The aristocracy pursued the aim of defending their own inherited rights and privileges against attack fromthe absolutist state, a strategy whose theoretical expression can be found in Montesquieu's theory of the intermediate bodies. The focal points of his work are: the critical epistolic novel Les Lettres Persanes (1728), in which two traveling Persians comment on French society at the time of Louis XIV from a critical outsiders' perspective; and secondly L'Esprit des Loix (1748), Montesquieu's main work of societal and political theory, which was banned after publication by state and Church censors. Based on a wide-ranging study of historical and literary sources, Montesquieu develops a historiographical reflection on the social, geopolitical and demographical determinates of var-ious systems of government in this work, in particular of monarchism, republicanism and despotism. His work also includes a tendentially normative theory of political and social systems. For Montesquieu, a conception of fair and good government is connected with the principle of ‘moderation’ ( modération) and a differentiated structure of checks and balances which equally serves all social and political interest groups. Charles-Louis de Secondat, who would become known as Baron de Montesquieu, was a French writer and intellectual who played an important role in the creation of the US Constitution. In 1713, upon his father's death, Montesquieu became head of the family estates in Bordeaux. Montesquieu followed a conventional pattern for a member of the nobility. His Bordeaux parliamentary duties were primarily judicial. In 1721 Montesquieu anonymously published The Persian Letters, a fictional account of two travelers from Persia who encounter mysterious and comical customs on a trip to Paris. In 1728 he was elected to the French Academy and began three years of traveling in Europe and England. Montesquieu's work focused on a rational and liberal reform of governmental power. He advocated tolerance and political openness. Montesquieu had a major influence on the framers of the US Constitution. He was liberally quoted by federalists such as Alexander Hamilton and James Madison to defend their formation of a three-part government. Read less
