      The US EPA announced recently it will review labeling and other guidelines for flea and tick products, a move that was greeted with "cautious optimism" by the Consumer Specialty Products Association, an industry group. The agency is reviewing topical, or "spot-on," pet products after a significant increase in reported adverse reactions in 2008. Adverse reactions in dogs or cats included skin rashes, gastrointestinal problems, or nervous system reactions, such as trembling, an appearance of depression or seizures, the agency says. For new products, EPA will grant only conditional, time-limited registrations to allow for post-marketing product surveillance. Read less

      The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s proposed guidelines for studies which estimate worker exposure to pesticides during application and related work activities are discussed. These guidelines are intended to aid pesticide registrants in conducting occupational exposure monitoring studies for pesticide applicators at indoor and outdoor sites. The Agency's rationale for requiring exposure to be monitored with passive dosimetry techniques or by biological monitoring is described. The practical and theoretical advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are also discussed. Read less
