•Study the impact of participation in land rental markets on agricultural labor productivity in rural China.•Using nationally representative farm-level data.•Use propensity score matching (PSM) and mediation analysis method.•Renting in land increased farm households’ ALP by 43%.•An indirect effect of land rental on labor productivity is mainly through the single-variable mediation pathway. Agricultural labor productivity (ALP) remains low in China. The unique land tenure system and fast-growing land rental market in China provides a new perspective in understanding the ALP problem. This study investigates the impact of participation in the land rental market on operator households’ agricultural labor productivity in rural China. Using national representative farm-level data, propensity matching score (PSM), and mediation analysis, we find that farm households’ ALP has improved about 43% after renting in farmland. The mediation analysis reveals that farm size in cultivation, family farm labor input, and capital services input are mediating variables through which land rental affects ALP. The indirect effect of land rental on labor productivity is mainly through the single-variable mediation path, namely farm size, and family farm labor input. Additionally, the two-variable mediation path is through farm size and capital services input, farm size, and family farm labor input. Read less

In the context of China's rapid economic development, numerous rural laborers go out to work driven by economic interests. How to release the surplus rural labor effectively is critical for the further development of urbanization in China. Land fragmentation is a basic characteristic of agricultural production in China. Land fragmentation also affects labor use. In the current process of China's rural reform and urbanization, large amounts of surplus rural labor will continue to transfer to urban and non-agricultural sectors in the near future, and the transfer mode will turn from individual migration to family migration. Marginal productivity of agricultural labor has an important influence on farmers' labor decisions. Using household survey data collected from Jiangsu province in China, this study analyzes the theoretical mechanism, and empirically tests the direction and degree of the impact of land fragmentation on marginal productivity of agricultural labor and non-agricultural labor supply. The results reveal that land fragmentation decreases marginal productivity of agricultural labor and increases non-agricultural labor supply. This effect is especially obvious for young agricultural workers. Supplementing relevant policies and preferential measures, the government should guide farmers to realize joint land operation and transfer of farmland management rights on a voluntary basis. Further, it is necessary to increase the supply of mechanized services and facilitate the development of small-sized agricultural machine that can be used on smaller landholdings. •Analyzes the theoretical mechanism of the impact of land fragmentation on MPL and non-agricultural labor supply.•Examines the direction and degree of the impact of land fragmentation on MPL and non-agricultural labor supply.•Land fragmentation decreases the MPL and increases the non-agricultural labor supply.•Effect of Land fragmentation on non-agricultural labor supply is especially obvious for young workers. This paper presents a framework for analyzing the changes in agricultural labor productivity with regards to the structural, land intensity, and land productivity effects. This approach allows for the residual-free decomposition of data from different levels of aggregation. The logarithmic mean Divisia index was applied for the analysis and a data envelopment analysis model was constructed to identify potential gains in agricultural labor productivity due to the optimization of input use and output production. The proposed approach was applied to the case of China over the period of 1997–2017. Province-level data were used to identify the major driving factors behind agricultural labor productivity change. Land productivity change appeared to be the major source of agricultural labor productivity gains in China. The structural change was rather negligible, suggesting that the reallocation of the agricultural labor force did not add to the agricultural labor productivity growth in China. A frontier analysis indicated that agricultural labor productivity could increase by some 45% on average in case full technical efficiency is achieved. •The paper analyzes the changes of agricultural labor productivity in China.•The Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index and Data Envelopment Analysis are applied.•Land productivity change is the major source of the labor productivity gains in China.•The results indicate the labor productivity could increase by about 45% on average.
