      This note explores the Hemingway and Hall family connections to Massachusetts. After a discussion of Grace Hall Hemingway's childhood visits to Nantucket, the argument examines the trip Hemingway took to Massachusetts with his mother when he was eleven years old in 1910 (the voyage was a rite of passage for all the Hemingway children when they turned eleven). This journey influenced Hemingway's earliest surviving piece of fiction, "My First Sea Vogue." Read less

      Annie's narration is chatty and ingenuous, focusing mostly on descriptions of her seven sisters' and one brother's personalities and talents, her friends at school, and the family's struggles with money.Given that she is required to accompany her older sisters on dates, this naïveté rings somewhat false, as does the fact that each of her elder siblings has some remarkable talent that, even in the book's 1980s setting, would have required more financial and time investment to cultivate than seems plausible given the family's straitened circumstances.
