Helen May Dennis, "Native American Literature: Towards a Spatialized Reading"; Daniel Heath Justice, "Our Fire Survives the Storm: A Cherokee Literary History"; Elvira Pulitano, "Toward a Native American Critical Theory"; David Treuer, "Native American Fiction: A User's Manual"; Robert Warrior, "The People and the Word: Reading Native Nonfiction"; and Jace Weaver, Craig S. Womack and Robert Warrior, "American Indian Literary Nationalism". The review begins by outlining some of the particular challenges European critics face in dealing with Native American literatures. It then outlines the deepest current division in Native American studies: that between "nationalist," "separatist" or "tribalcentric" critics concerned with researching the historical foundations of (and furthering) autonomous Native American intellectual traditions; and a "cosmopolitan", "hybridist" or "postcolonial" group more concerned with investigating the complex interrelationships between European and Native thought over the colonial period, often encapsulated in the figure of the mixedblood. This selection of two books of theory and four works of practical criticism demonstrate this division and suggest new routes for European scholars. It concludes that from a consideration of the four Native studies books that the nationalist critics' choice to limit the use of "Western" literary analysis and draw on tribal histories and philosophies to construct new, specifically Native, critical methods has some way to go to equal the results of traditional textual critique; but also that the tendency among some academics to dismiss nationalist criticism as simply naive is far more problematic. Although American Indian literary nationalism seemingly has some way to go before it can produce readings as subtle and diverse as those offered by hybridist and postcolonial models, the endeavour of both is worthwhile, making Native American literature a fascinating area of study. European critics, outside the conversation, should draw on the insights of nationalist criticism and engage with these critics in ways that will help refine the nationalist critique, without assuming any right of judgement. Review of Sacvan Bercovitch, ed., "The Cambridge History of American Literature" (8 vols.), outlining all the contributions to a project judged to be without doubt and without any serious rivals the best scholarly history of American literature for our generation. "The Cambridge History" does precisely what a literary history must: it is a monumental work that resists monumentality, a critical history that problematises criticism and history; and it argues and works against claims to wholeness and transcendence of conflict, the presumptions of innocence and immediacy on which the American narrative is founded. It fully realises its editor's principal aim to make the "problem" of critical "dissensus" his cornerstone. (Quotes from original text) Read less
