Booklist Review

Sometimes it's best just to see the evidence, straight up, without preamble. That's the approach taken here to documenting the state of the planet in dramatic photographs of every continent. Each potent page-spread presents crisp, stunning images and succinctly informative captions presenting the stark truths about climate change and its consequences, from imperiled water supplies to diminished forests, rising sea levels, and destroyed and endangered communities. Here are dramatic images of tornadoes and hurricanes and the wreckage they cause; staggering before-and-after aerial views of shrinking glaciers, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs; eroding shorelines; and the disquieting ravages of floods, wildfires, encroaching deserts, and dust storms. A pervading sense of emergency is evoked as well as wonder at the sheer beauty of Earth, a dichotomy neatly addressed in the closing section, "Unusual Trends," which includes two images capturing the rare upside of COVID-19 restrictions: exceptionally clean canals in Venice and sparkling-clear air in routinely smog-afflicted New Delhi. This direct and resounding testimony to the havoc being wrought by climate change strengthens the case for changing our ways to forestall further damage.
