Das Schweizer Jahrbuch für Musikwissenschaft hat die Aufgabe, die Ergebnisse musikwissenschaftlicher Forschung zu präsentieren, die im Land zu allen denkbaren Gegenständen betrieben wird. Darüber hinaus werden Beiträge namhafter Kollegen der internationalen Forschergemeinschaft veröffentlicht. Der vorliegende Band Nr. 36 enthält Studien zur schweizerischen Musik und zu den Identitätsdiskursen, an deren Entwicklung sie beteiligt war (Andrea Kammermann, Yannick Wey und Raymond Ammann über Ferdinand Fürchtegott Huber; Jacques Tchamkerten über Ernest Bloch). Daneben sind Beiträge zu mediengeschichtlichen Aspekten und Diskussionen über kulturelle Verbreitungsformen von Musik im 20. Jahrhundert enthalten (Carlo Piccardi über die Natur des radiophonen Musikhörens, Angela Carone über das Wirken von Roman Vlad). Aus einer anderen methodischen Perspektive analysiert Susan Rutherford die Struktur des Mythos, der die Operndiva und ihr Publikum verbindet. Die Rezension am Ende des Bandes bespricht eine Publikation, die auf die intellektuelle und musikalische Geschichte der Schweiz eingeht.

The Antiquity of the Italian Nation : The Cultural Origins of a Political Myth in Modern Italy, 1796-1943

With Italy under Napoleonic rule at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the antiquarian topic of anti-romanism became a pillar of the Italian nation-building process and, in turn, was used against the dominant French culture. The history of the Italian nation predating the Roman Empire supported the idea of an Italian cultural primacy and proved crucial in the creation of modern Italian nationalism. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Italian studies of Roman history would drape a dark veil over the earliest history of Italy while Fascism openly claimed the legacy of the Roman Empire. Italic antiquity would, however, remain alive through all those years, intersecting with the political and cultural life of modern Italy. In this book, De Francesco examines the different uses of the constantly reasserted antiquity of the Italian nation in history, archaeology, palaeoethnology, and anthropology from the Napoleonic period to the collapse of Fascism.

Oper und Aufklärung bilden keineswegs einen Widerspruch, sondern stehen in einem produktiven Verhältnis zueinander; nicht zufällig ist die Gattung ein bevorzugtes Streitobjekt der Aufklärer. Am bündigsten kommen diese Debatten in Francesco Algarottis'Saggio sopra l'opera in musica'zum Ausdruck, einer Schrift, die zuerst 1755 erschien und bald in ganz Europa Verbreitung fand, heute aber so gut wie vergessen ist. So elegant wie scharfzüngig führt Algarotti darin seine Vorstellungen von einer grundlegenden Reform der Oper nach den Maßgaben einer aufgeklärten Ästhetik aus, wobei er auch auf seine Erfahrungen als spiritus rector der friderizianischen Oper in Berlin und Potsdam zurückgreifen kann. In vorliegendem Band werden diese Schrift und ihre weitreichenden Wirkungen von Literatur-, Musik- und Theaterwissenschaftlern sowie Philosophiehistorikern erstmals umfassend analysiert und kontextualisiert. Hinzu kommt eine kommentierte Edition der am weitesten verbreiteten Fassung des'Saggio'sowie ihrer einflussreichen deutschen Übersetzung durch den umstrittenen Aufklärer Rudolf Erich Raspe.

Stemmatology studies aspects of textual criticism that use genealogical methods to analyse a set of copies of a text whose autograph has been lost. This handbook is the first to cover the entire field, encompassing both theoretical and practical aspects of traditional as well as modern digital methods and their history. As an art (ars), stemmatology's main goal is editing and thus presenting to the reader a historical text in the most satisfactory way. As a more abstract discipline (scientia), it is interested in the general principles of how texts change in the process of being copied. Thirty eight experts from all of the fields involved have joined forces to write this handbook, whose eight chapters cover material aspects of text traditions, the genesis and methods of traditional'Lachmannian'textual criticism and the objections raised against it, as well as modern digital methods used in the field. The two concluding chapters take a closer look at how this approach towards texts and textual criticism has developed in some disciplines of textual scholarship and compare methods used in other fields that deal with'descent with modification'. The handbook thus serves as an introduction to this interdisciplinary field.

The essay offers a new version of the commemorative speech that Professor Francesco Torraca delivered at Naples University in 1917, commemorating his teacher Francesco De Sanctis , on the first centenary of his birth. The text is preceded by an introduction. Torraca's speech, published in the year of delivery, and subsequently in 1928, is still attractive to the reader on account of the strength of its eloquent rhetoric, aiming bringing the figure of De Sanctis to life. Moreover, being delivered in war time, the speech widens its meaning through the epic exemplarity of the distinguished man's life, a model of ethic and civic engagement for the young scholars or the "scuola sottufficiali" pupils present at the commemoration. Die zugängliche Sprache und der auch für junge Menschen interessante und pädagogisch wertvolle Inhalt seiner Kurzbiographien machten ihn über viele Generationen hinweg zur ersten lateinischen Lektüre angehender Gelehrter in ganz Europa; das letzte Jahrzehnt hat ihn in dieser Funktion als Alternative zum martialischen Cäsar wiederentdeckt. Mit der vorliegenden Bibliographie ist erstmals seit 1781 der Versuch unternommen worden, sämtliche seit Beginn des Buchdrucks erschienenen Editionen und die gesamte gedruckte Literatur über Kornel und sein Werk Philologen, Literaturwissenschaftlern und Pädagogen zugänglich zu machen.

In Ancient Marbles in Naples in the Eighteenth Century Eloisa Dodero aims at documenting the history of numerous private collections formed in Naples during the 18th century, with particular concern for the “Neapolitan marbles” and the circumstances of their dispersal. Research has thus made it possible to formulate a synthesis of the collecting dynamics of Naples in the 18th century, to define the interest of the great European collectors, especially British, in the antiquities of the city and its territory and to draw up a catalogue which for the first time brings together the nucleus of sculptures reported in the Neapolitan collections or coming from irregular excavations, most of which shared the destiny of dispersal, in some cases here traced in definitive fashion.

Winner of the 2021 Donald E. Osterbrock Book Prize for Historical Astronomy In Decoding the Stars, Ileana Chinnici offers an account of the life of the Jesuit scientist Angelo Secchi (1818-1878). In addition to providing an invaluable account of Secchi's life and work—something that has been sorely lacking in the English-language scholarship—this biography will be especially stimulating for those interested in the evolution of astrophysics as a discipline from the nineteenth century onward. Despite his eclecticism, reminiscent of the natural philosophers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Secchi was in many ways a very modern scientist: open to innovation and cooperation, and a promoter of popularization and citizen science. Secchi also appears fully inserted in the cultural context of his time: he participated in philosophical and scientific debates, spread new theories and ideas, but also suffered the consequences of political events that marked those years and impacted on his life and activities.

The first monograph entirely devoted to the Epicurean doctrine of minimal parts. The Epicurean doctrine of minimal parts (ta elachista) is a crucial aspect of Epicurus's philosophy and a genuine turning point compared to the ancient atomism of Leucippus and Democritus. This book consists of three chapters: a philological and theoretical analysis of the primary sources (Epicurus and Lucretius) of the doctrine, a reconstruction of its likely historical background (Xenocrates, Aristotle, Diodorus Cronus), and a close examination of the chiefly geometrical development of this theory within the philosophical school of Epicurus. The critical examination of ancient sources (including several Herculaneum Papyri), combined with a careful analysis of the secondary literature, reveals the very significant role played by minimal parts within the Epicurean science of nature. This is the first monograph entirely devoted to the study of this important doctrine in all its historical and theoretical breadth. Questo volume esamina la dottrina epicurea dei minimi (ta elachista) che rappresenta un nodo cruciale della filosofia di Epicuro e un autentico punto di svolta rispetto all'atomismo di Leucippo e Democrito. Il libro è organizzato in tre capitoli dedicati rispettivamente: (1) all'analisi filologica e teorica delle fonti primarie (Epicuro e Lucrezio), (2) alla ricostruzione del contesto storico-filosofico a cui la dottrina dei minimi verosimilmente fa riferimento (Senocrate, Aristotele e Diodoro Crono), e, infine, (3) all'approfondimento dello sviluppo della teoria dei minimi in ambito prevalentemente geometrico all'interno della scuola di Epicuro. L'esame critico delle fonti antiche (che riguardano anche alcuni Papiri Ercolanesi), anche attraverso l'attenta analisi della letteratura secondaria, conferma il ruolo decisivo giocato dai minimi nella scienza della natura epicurea. What appears in the title of the book, i.e. Islamic Manuscripts, is a name that mostly denotes what in Arabic is called nusakh (singular nuskhah), which is a common word for'transcript', or'copy', a medium of transmission of Islamic texts with exclusive reference to manuscripts. The term nuskhah is what in Persian is called dastnivishtih or dastnibishtih, and in Turkish yazmalar. It includes, not only, books, but as well, letters and documents written on papyrus, parchment, hides, paper and painting materials or anything, so to speak, produced by'hand'and has some relation with'paper'. Moreover it should be ment-ioned that the attribute'Islamic', does not in any way signify the religious aspect of the term, but rather it pertains to things created or produced in the atmosphere of Islamic civilization. This bibliography encompasses materials written in Latin script languages up to 2010. As for the internal classification of the book, it should be stated that all records have been numbered and listed alphabetically according to the authors'name, and in the case of lack of author the title of the book has been taken into consideration. Three more indexes, i.e. Name, Book & Subject Index, have also been added to facilitate an easier access to each entry. It must, furthermore, be stated, that numbers appearing in the Indexes pertain to those of each record, not to the pages.

The basis for our understanding of Leonardo's theory of art was, for over 150 years, his Treatise on Painting, which was issued in 1651 in Italian and French. This present volume offers both the first scholarly edition of the Italian editio princeps as well as the first complete English translation of this seminal work. In addition, It provides a comprehensive study of the Italian first edition, documenting how each editorial campaign that lead to it produced a different understanding of the artist's theory. What emerges is a rich cultural and textual history that foregrounds the transmission of artisanal knowledge from Leonardo's workshop in the Duchy of Milan to Carlo Borromeo's Milan, Cosimo I de 'Medici's Florence, Urban VIII's Rome, and Louis XIV's Paris.

Ce livre propose un état de la réflexion sur le sujet.
