Advances in Edge Computing: Massive Parallel Processing and Applications
2020; Vol. 00035
The rapid advance of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has resulted in the number of IoT-connected devices growing exponentially, with billions of connected devices worldwide. While this development brings with it great opportunities for many fields of science, engineering, business and everyday life, it also presents challenges such as an architectural bottleneck – with a very large number of IoT devices connected to a rather small number of servers in Cloud data centers – and the problem of data deluge. Edge computing aims to alleviate the computational burden of the IoT for the Cloud by pushing some of the computations and logics of processing from the Cloud to the Edge of the Internet. It is becoming commonplace to allocate tasks and applications such as data filtering, classification, semantic enrichment and data aggregation to this layer, but to prevent this new layer from itself becoming another bottleneck for the whole computing stack from IoT to the Cloud, the Edge computing layer needs to be capable of implementing massively parallel and distributed algorithms efficiently. This book, Advances in Edge Computing: Massive Parallel Processing and Applications, addresses these challenges in 11 chapters. Subjects covered include: Fog storage software architecture; IoT-based crowdsourcing; the industrial Internet of Things; privacy issues; smart home management in the Cloud and the Fog; and a cloud robotic solution to assist medical applications. Providing an overview of developments in the field, the book will be of interest to all those working with the Internet of Things and Edge computing.

Parallel Computing: Accelerating Computational Science and Engineering (CSE)
2014; Vol. 00025
Parallel computing has been the enabling technology of high-end machines for many years. Now, it has finally become the ubiquitous key to the efficient use of any kind of multi-processor computer architecture, from smart phones, tablets, embedded systems and cloud computing up to exascale computers. This book presents the proceedings of ParCo2013 – the latest edition of the biennial International Conference on Parallel Computing – held from 10 to 13 September 2013, in Garching, Germany. The conference focused on several key parallel computing areas. Themes included parallel programming models for multi- and manycore CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs and heterogeneous platforms, the performance engineering processes that must be adapted to efficiently use these new and innovative platforms, novel numerical algorithms and approaches to large-scale simulations of problems in science and engineering. The conference programme also included twelve mini-symposia (including an industry session and a special PhD Symposium), which comprehensively represented and intensified the discussion of current hot topics in high performance and parallel computing. These special sessions covered large-scale supercomputing, novel challenges arising from parallel architectures (multi-/manycore, heterogeneous platforms, FPGAs), multi-level algorithms as well as multi-scale, multi-physics and multi-dimensional problems. It is clear that parallel computing – including the processing of large data sets (“Big Data”) – will remain a persistent driver of research in all fields of innovative computing, which makes this book relevant to all those with an interest in this field.

Computing : A Concise History
2012
A compact and accessible history, from punch cards and calculators to UNIVAC and ENIAC, the personal computer, Silicon Valley, and the Internet. The history of computing could be told as the story of hardware and software, or the story of the Internet, or the story of “smart” hand-held devices, with subplots involving IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter. In this concise and accessible account of the invention and development of digital technology, computer historian Paul Ceruzzi offers a broader and more useful perspective. He identifies four major threads that run throughout all of computing's technological development: digitization—the coding of information, computation, and control in binary form, ones and zeros; the convergence of multiple streams of techniques, devices, and machines, yielding more than the sum of their parts; the steady advance of electronic technology, as characterized famously by “Moore's Law”; and the human-machine interface.Ceruzzi guides us through computing history, telling how a Bell Labs mathematician coined the word “digital” in 1942 (to describe a high-speed method of calculating used in anti-aircraft devices), and recounting the development of the punch card (for use in the 1890 U.S. Census). He describes the ENIAC, built for scientific and military applications; the UNIVAC, the first general purpose computer; and ARPANET, the Internet's precursor. Ceruzzi's account traces the world-changing evolution of the computer from a room-size ensemble of machinery to a “minicomputer” to a desktop computer to a pocket-sized smart phone. He describes the development of the silicon chip, which could store ever-increasing amounts of data and enabled ever-decreasing device size. He visits that hotbed of innovation, Silicon Valley, and brings the story up to the present with the Internet, the World Wide Web, and social networking.

The Layers of Cloud Computing Infrastructure and Security Attacking Issues.
Journal of Pharmaceutical Negative Results. 2022 Special Issue, Vol. 13, p792-800. 9p.
Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage and computing power, without direct active management by the user. The term is generally used to describe data centers available to many users over the Internet. Cloud computing is not a computer network only it's about hosting and services that are provided, run, and maintain over that network. Application or documentation is hosted on a single company server and accessed via the company network with network computing. Cloud computing is bigger than that it Includes multiple companies, multiple servers, as well as multiple networks. In this paper, we mainly discuss three main issues of cloud computing issues in the cloud, Attacks on cloud infrastructure, and security at different layers in the cloud. The main objectives of this research are to identify the meaning of cloud computing, get knowledge about the history of cloud computing, identify issues in cloud computing, identify challenges in cloud computing, and identify solutions for the issues in cloud computing. The research also touches on the cloud services are now an integral part of corporate life, bringing with them the opportunity to accelerate business with their fast-tracking capabilities, allowing us to accelerate our resources, and provide new opportunities for collaboration. The world today is becoming increasingly cloudy, and the effects of businesses and consumers alike are far-reaching. Cloud Computing brings many benefits to its users such as reduced costs, easy shipping, scale as you want, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On Computing : The Fourth Great Scientific Domain
2013
A proposal that computing is not merely a form of engineering but a scientific domain on a par with the physical, life, and social sciences.Computing is not simply about hardware or software, or calculation or applications. Computing, writes Paul Rosenbloom, is an exciting and diverse, yet remarkably coherent, scientific enterprise that is highly multidisciplinary yet maintains a unique core of its own. In On Computing, Rosenbloom proposes that computing is a great scientific domain on a par with the physical, life, and social sciences. Rosenbloom introduces a relational approach for understanding computing, conceptualizing it in terms of forms of interaction and implementation, to reveal the hidden structures and connections among its disciplines. He argues for the continuing vitality of computing, surveying the leading edge in computing's combination with other domains, from biocomputing and brain-computer interfaces to crowdsourcing and virtual humans to robots and the intermingling of the real and the virtual. He explores forms of higher order coherence, or macrostructures, over complex computing topics and organizations. Finally, he examines the very notion of a great scientific domain in philosophical terms, honing his argument that computing should be considered the fourth great scientific domain. With On Computing, Rosenbloom, a key architect of the founding of University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies and former Deputy Director of USC's Information Sciences Institute, offers a broader perspective on what computing is and what it can become.

Why Science and Art Creativities Matter : (Re-)Configuring STEAM for Future-Making Education
2020; Vol. 00018
Why Science and Arts Creativities Matter is a ground-breaking text which significantly extends current understandings of STEAM and debates about individuation of disciplines vis-à-vis transdisciplinary theory. Drawing upon posthumanism, new materialism and enactivism, this collection of chapters aims to dwell further into the ways in which we come to know in relationship with the world. The text draws together a wide set of approaches and points of views to stimulate dialogue and awareness of the different ways in which we can extend the repertoire of human faculties for thinking and experiencing the world. A unique invitation is shared with readers to develop greater understanding of the contribution of education across the arts and sciences and to re-imagine our collective futures. This book is a unique and timely volume that opens up several new lines of enquiry and arguments on STEAM education. It rebalances and readdresses the current emphasis in the literature around STEAM as another, newer opportunity to teach content. Instead, it brings a more specific focus on an entwining of contemporary theorists – putting theory to work – to extend the means for understanding and cultivating science and arts creativities, and make explicit key connections with the materiality of practices. This new go-to text offers a demonstration of how the latest research and theoretically engaged thinking (thinking through theory) on STEAM education can be put to work in practice. Contributors are: Ramsey Affifi, Sofie Areljung, Chris Brownell, Pamela Burnard, Kerry Chappell, Laura Colucci-Gray, Carolyn Cooke, Kristóf Fenyvesi, Erik Fooladi, Cathy Francis, Lindsay Hetherington, Anna Hickey-Moody, Christine Horn, Tim Ingold, Riikka Kosola, Zsolt Lavicza, Elsa Lee, Saara Lehto, Danielle Lloyd, James Macallister, Caroline Maloney, Tessa Mcgavock, Karin Murris, Lena Nasiakou, Edvin Østergaard, Anne Pirrie, Hermione Ruck Keene, Ruth Sapsed, Diana Scherer, Pallawi Sinha, Margaret Somerville, Keiren Stephenson, Carine Steyn, Jan Van Boeckel, Nicola Walshe, Olivier Werner, Marissa Willcox, and Heather Wren.

Cloud 9: Learning in the Information Age
2015
Education is the harbinger of change; technological learning in the Information Age is at the cusp of that change, bringing new technologies, enhanced interfaces, dialogue, mobile learning and networked resources that shape content, sharing and distribution of information. These aspects influence the people and society of the “climate century”. The Information Age follows the production of data in previously unheard quantities. In the early days of widespread computer usage, we had a plethora of theories with only a paucity of data. Now, the data we produce is so large that it requires new analytics and new patterns of interpretative meaning. New methods of storage and analysis are needed in order to quantify ‘big data.'But we live in uncertain times, in which even the climate—like financial markets is more volatile than it was in the pre-industrial second millennium, making technological adaptation ever more critical. This technological adaptation needs to occur in conjunction with an attitude which fosters a ‘caring curiosity'for the biosphere which sustains us. Education is about gaining qualifications, but it is also about intrinsically dispelling uncertainty in the quest for knowledge and techniques to enhance the experience of life and living. Cloud 9: Learning in the Information Age explores some of the methods and learning techniques and technologies that help us to do this.

Science and Mathematics Education in Multicultural Contexts:New Directions in Teaching and Learning
2020
This edited volume comprehensively enlightens readers with descriptive, analytical and suggestive research on science and mathematics education in multicultural contexts. The diverse background of the authors renders a wide variety of perspectives on pedagogy, policy, and reform of new directions in science and mathematics education. As such, it provides useful insights for researchers, policy makers, graduate students and teaching professionals at all levels. Through twenty one chapters, the book examines the theory and practice of science and mathematics education, contributes descriptively and empirically to current research, and shares recommendations that have cross-cultural implications. For example, driven by a desire to move away from relying on oil revenue for development, the Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) countries continue to improve education and invest in scientific and engineering advancements. Nevertheless, for many students across the region, schooling is still not synonymous with learning; schools and colleges need to implement new educational directions, those that are more deeply focused on science, mathematics, STEM and inquiry-based curricula and career opportunities in the region. These new directions are suggested and reflected in the forward-looking nature of this book, one that recommends approaches better suited for twenty-first century science, mathematics and STEM education.

Fostering Integrity in Research
2017
The integrity of knowledge that emerges from research is based on individual and collective adherence to core values of objectivity, honesty, openness, fairness, accountability, and stewardship. Integrity in science means that the organizations in which research is conducted encourage those involved to exemplify these values in every step of the research process. Understanding the dynamics that support? or distort? practices that uphold the integrity of research by all participants ensures that the research enterprise advances knowledge. The 1992 report Responsible Science: Ensuring the Integrity of the Research Process evaluated issues related to scientific responsibility and the conduct of research. It provided a valuable service in describing and analyzing a very complicated set of issues, and has served as a crucial basis for thinking about research integrity for more than two decades. However, as experience has accumulated with various forms of research misconduct, detrimental research practices, and other forms of misconduct, as subsequent empirical research has revealed more about the nature of scientific misconduct, and because technological and social changes have altered the environment in which science is conducted, it is clear that the framework established more than two decades ago needs to be updated. Responsible Science served as a valuable benchmark to set the context for this most recent analysis and to help guide the committee's thought process. Fostering Integrity in Research identifies best practices in research and recommends practical options for discouraging and addressing research misconduct and detrimental research practices.

Human Machine Collaboration and Interaction for Smart Manufacturing : Automation, Robotics, Sensing, Artificial Intelligence, 5G, IoTs and Blockchain
2022; Vol. 00132
Advanced technologies such as robotics, 5G mobile communications, IoT, cloud computing and wireless sensor networks have had a huge impact and influence on manufacturing, with an increased collaboration between humans and smart systems. As the manufacturing process becomes more automated using real-time data, communication systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and robotics feed data back into the manufacturing process. This enables the design of products that are more customized and personal, and leads to a more competitive, efficient and value-added production process by reacting more quickly to technical or human errors to avoid product and system damage while increasing workplace safety, and reducing waste, pollution, and associated costs.

Critical Issues and Bold Visions for Science Education : The Road Ahead
2019; Vol. 00063
Critical Issues and Bold Visions for Science Education contains 16 chapters written by 32 authors from 11 countries. The book is intended for a broad audience of teachers, teacher educators, researchers, and policymakers. Interesting perspectives, challenging problems, and fresh solutions grounded in cutting edge theory and research are presented, interrogated, elaborated and, while retaining complexity, offer transformative visions within a context of political tensions, historical legacies, and grand challenges associated with Anthropocene (e.g., sustainability, climate change, mass extinctions). Within overarching sociocultural frameworks, authors address diverse critical issues using rich theoretical frameworks and methodologies suited to research today and a necessity to make a difference while ensuring that all participants benefit from research and high standards of ethical conduct. The focus of education is broad, encompassing teaching, learning and curriculum in pre-k-12 schools, museums and other informal institutions, community gardens, and cheeseworld. Teaching and learning are considered for a wide range of ages, languages, and nationalities. An important stance that permeates the book is that research is an activity from which all participants learn, benefit, and transform personal and community practices. Transformation is an integral part of research in science education. Contributors are: Jennifer Adams, Arnau Amat, Lucy Avraamidou, Marcília Elis Barcellos, Alberto Bellocchi, Mitch Bleier, Lynn A. From X-rays to DNA : How Engineering Drives Biology
2014
An argument that technology accelerates biological discovery, with case studies ranging from chromosome discovery with early microscopes to how DNA replicates using radioisotope labels.Engineering has been an essential collaborator in biological research and breakthroughs in biology are often enabled by technological advances. Decoding the double helix structure of DNA, for example, only became possible after significant advances in such technologies as X-ray diffraction and gel electrophoresis. Diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis improved as new technologies—including the stethoscope, the microscope, and the X-ray—developed. These engineering breakthroughs take place away from the biology lab, and many years may elapse before the technology becomes available to biologists. In this book, David Lee argues for concurrent engineering—the convergence of engineering and biological research—as a means to accelerate the pace of biological discovery and its application to diagnosis and treatment. He presents extensive case studies and introduces a metric to measure the time between technological development and biological discovery.Investigating a series of major biological discoveries that range from pasteurization to electron microscopy, Lee finds that it took an average of forty years for the necessary technology to become available for laboratory use. Lee calls for new approaches to research and funding to encourage a tighter, more collaborative coupling of engineering and biology. Only then, he argues, will we see the rapid advances in the life sciences that are critically needed for life-saving diagnosis and treatment.
