The result is an effective representation of the tools of the trade for the neurologist in training and a concise and precise source for the practicing neurologist. The second edition was published in 2003. Since then, advances in the definition of many neurological conditions have been made, all of which have been incorporated in the third edition. There has also been a fine tuning of the definitions and diagnostic criteria of many other conditions. The author has collated over 1300 articles since the last edition in order to update many of the entries. As such, the entries will have the most up-to-date definition of diseases, symptoms, diagnostic tests, and pearls of wisdom. The third edition remains an invaluable guide to the spectrum of neurological practice and with nearly 7,000 references this truly is the bible of neurological terms and conditions.

The result effectively represents the tools of the trade for the neurologist in training and a source of information for the practicing neurologist that is both precise and concise. The first edition was published in 1995. Since then, advances in the definition of many neurological conditions have been made, all of which have been incorporated in the second edition. These include criteria for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, dementia of Lewy-body type, frontal lobe dementias, chronic fatigue syndrome, and inflammatory neuropathies. There has also been fine-tuning of the definitions and diagnostic criteria for many other conditions. In the second edition further precision in definition has been achieved for the entries on at least 1,500 other disease states, syndromes, and clinical features. The clinical delineation for new syndromes and their genetic bases and of clinical subtypes of known disorders has also progressed. Entries on cerebellar diseases, peripheral neuropathies, various dementias, diagnostic tests (both clinical and laboratory), forms of cerebral edema, dissociative signs and syndromes - all these and many more have been added, expanded, updated or clarified in the light of new publications. Numerous web-site addresses also have been included in the new edition, as have portraits of 77 distinguished neurologists. The second edition remains an invaluable guide by a single author to the whole menu of neurological practice.

Disorders of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are the cause of prominent neurological symptoms including weakness, sensory loss, pain and autonomic dysfunction associated with deficits, morbidity and mortality. These disorders may be primary hereditary or cryptogenic neurologic disorders confined to the PNS or part of the pathology of both the central nervous system and the PNS. Most PNS disorders are secondary to other system disorders and may be responsive to treatment of the primary disease. Important advances have been obtained in several areas including molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology that have enhanced our understanding of the causes and consequences of damage to peripheral nerve. Understanding of both these groups of PNS diseases has greatly expanded over recent years and has led to important advances of treatment both to protect and to repair damages of peripheral nerve. This volume provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of examination, diagnosis and treatment of these very diverse disorders and will be of interest to both the research and clinical neuroscience and neurology communities.
