This paper presents the way we try to track the history of mental health services offered to residents of official language minority communities throughout Northern and Eastern Ontario. The study also holds an interest in the post-deinstitutionalization paths of patients suffering from mental health conditions. Our research strand concerns Northern Ontario, its patient associations, its services, its specialists and its institutions and the access to hospitals archives.

Along with a teaching collection, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, began accepting medical artifacts for a historical museum in the early 1920s, although it never developed into more than an unofficial collection until the 1970s, when it was transformed into the Medical Museum and Archives at the University Hospital. In the 1990s, the artifacts were dispersed among several local institutions. The remaining objects at the university have been now reorganized as the Medical Artifact Collection. While these objects were once used to educate students about the practice and philosophy of medicine, they are now used to teach students about local, medical, Canadian and public history.

The records management program at Kingston General Hospital is by no means complete, though considerable progress has been made. Users are gaining confidence in the records centre and more departments are becoming involved. To date, 12 departments are participating fully in the program. In the future, we may consider computerization--for faster retrieval of records--staffing requirements and storage of paperless abstracts to maintain an efficient and effective records management program.

1989
Guide to Historical Resources in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo identifies the archival collections of over one hundred and seventy-five museums, libraries, archives, government offices, social agencies, clubs and business in the Waterloo region and beyond. It provides a comprehensive approach to surveying the community, and should suggest to the creative research further avenues for investigation. The guide will facilitate access to many areas of historical study, and will be of interest to teachers, students, and researcher of local history as well as members of government and heritage organizations in the Waterloo region. The survey of historical resources was a project of Doon Heritage Crossroads'curatorial and research staff, and was made possible by the work of dedicated volunteers and by the support of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, the Ministry of Culture and Communications and the Good Foundation.

This paper proposes a historiographical discussion based on the article « Les contrecoups de la déshospitalisation psychiatrique. L'exemple du parcours transinstitutionel de Françoise ». Françoise's transinstitutional journey presented in the collective publication La fin de l'asile ? Histoire de la déshospitalisation psychiatrique dans l'espace francophone au XX e siècle , gives me the opportunity to reveal the subtext of this article, and to describe the method and the historical reasoning that gave life to the psychiatric journey of an anonymous person named Françoise. This process is organized around three main points: my positioning as a researcher, the issues related to my narrative approach, and a statement on my historical reasoning in an interdisciplinary perspective. Influenced and inspired by the work of Alain Corbin, George Duby, Roy Porter, Natalie Zemon Davis and Arlette Farge, my approach focusses on the feelings and emotions hidden in historical sources. I remain connected to a subjective intuition, and stay away from positivist reflexes. Based on my research experience with psychiatric records, my conclusion explores the renewal of historical writing , in which I suggest that it is possible to write the history of ordinary people while telling stories with sensitivity.

Access, preservation and analysis in a consortial journal archive: the evolution of Scholars Portal Journals.
Insights: the UKSG journal. 2/21/2019, Vol. 32 Issue 7, p1-10. 10p.
This article discusses Scholars Portal Journals (SP Journals), a library consortium-run platform that aggregates and archives licensed scholarly journal content in the province of Ontario, Canada. Born in the early days of e-journals out of a need to provide consistent and long-term access to scholarly materials in the sometimes volatile world of online publishing, SP Journals has evolved into a major digital repository and archive. With over 55 million full-text articles and serving a student population of just under half a million, SP Journals represents a major investment in access to online scholarship. This article explains the lifecycle of content on the platform, from initial publisher negotiations to delivering usage reports, and discusses considerations of running a locally hosted journal platform.
