In an increasingly competitive market, the onerous is on departments to ensure that students build targeted skills. Nevertheless, in an ever more polarized and politicized world, it is unwise to trade off engaging in social justice for a checklist of abilities. Community-based and service-learning offer the unique opportunity for students to hone their professional skills while developing into responsive citizens. We explore partnering with Spanish-speaking communities in two contexts: a land-grant and a Jesuit university. Student reflections demonstrate that being in situations where community members are their equals allows them to build empathy, test their intercultural competence, and make connections between their studies and careers.

Strategic Doing and the PROSPER Program Delivery System: A Case Study of the Translational Research Process

This article summarizes a project focused on the PROSPER program delivery system as a formal vehicle for addressing substance misuse and abuse in Ohio communities. Promoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience (PROSPER) is a nationally recognized, evidence-based program delivery system designed to implement prevention programming provided by a partnership among local schools and communities, the university-based Cooperative Extension system, and state leadership. A case study is presented that describes a midproject effort to develop strategies for advancing PROSPER goals through a process called "strategic doing." Strategic doing brings partners together to develop strong collaborations that achieve highly desired outcomes. The case study is an example of a formal effort to translate scientific knowledge into applications that address real-life problems. Implications for translational research are discussed.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a signature federal program that in FY2019 provided financial assistance to 35 million low-income Americans. SNAP is a focused program that increases food access, reduces hunger, and improves the nutrition and health of low-income American families. It is in the interest of the nation and individuals that SNAP recipients be equipped with evidence-based information to guide the selection of healthy food purchases with their SNAP benefits and to engage in food preparation practices and behaviors that lead to improved health and quality of life outcomes. The provision of this information is accomplished through a formal SNAP-Education (SNAP-Ed) program. The United States' unique system of land-grant universities plays a central role in the delivery of SNAP-Ed across the nation. Land-grant universities (LGUs) are the home to Cooperative Extension, a long-standing outreach system that delivers educational content and best-practice knowledge to individuals and families at a local level. The report are the results of a detailed survey administered to the LGUs engaged in SNAP-Ed. The Community Nutrition Education (CNE) Logic Model was used as the foundation for collecting data for this report, similar to the previous reports generated for the LGU System. The goal of the FY2019 report is to provide a national "snapshot" of SNAP-Ed programs implemented through the LGU system. [The report was prepared by TEConomy Partners, LLC. Perceptions of Agricultural Leadership Academic Programs of 1862 Land-Grant Universities
Journal of Agricultural Education. 2017 58(4):65-82.
This study characterized perceptions of agricultural leadership programs in colleges of agriculture, food, life, human, or environmental sciences at 1,862 land-grant institutions. Objectives included describing the need for programs, studying evolution within the discipline, discussing faculty recommendations for future development, and examining why programs are relevant. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, which included open and axial coding. A total of 26 academic agricultural leadership programs were identified, and a telephone interview was completed by 19 agricultural leadership faculty members. Results of the study indicated agricultural leadership was historically founded under the umbrella of agricultural and extension education but also evolved from a need in industry. The discipline evolved because the academic subject matter was broadly appealing to students, and its growth was also spurred by the popularity of community and rural leadership development programs. To improve agricultural leadership programs, faculty surveyed recommended collaborative efforts across the discipline to establish a unified vision and a national professional organization. Throughout the interviews, themes emerged related to the relevancy of agricultural leadership programs in higher education: (1) The agricultural leadership discipline creates leaders through developing "human capital," and (2) graduates promote industry growth through their political, policy, and public influence. Future recommendations for research included identifying perceptions of agricultural leadership beyond the scope of 1,862 land-grant institutions.

'Let Us Tell the Story of Our Land and Place': Tribal Leaders on the Seizure and Sale of Territories Benefiting Land-Grant Universities

The Stepping Out and Stepping Up (SOSU) Native American Racial Justice Project initiative, developed in partnership with First Nations Development Institute (FNDI), was designed to address the dispossession and sale of tribal lands used to establish the Ohio State University. This work was inspired by the publication of the "Land Grab Universities Report" (Lee & Ahtone, 2020), which provided exact details regarding amounts of land taken from specific tribal nations and meticulously documented the circumstances surrounding the dispossession and the sums of monies raised in the sale of each parcel that was used to fund 52 Land-Grant universities through the 1862 Morrill Act. According to the "Land Grab Universities Report," more than 100 tribes experienced the dispossession of over 640,000 acres of land that were provided to the state government of Ohio to establish the Ohio State University. This article focuses on the SOSU activities centering on the viewpoints of the leaders of those tribal nations whose land was seized and sold to help found the Ohio State University. It reports on the results of the first 12 interviews conducted with the leaders of current tribal nations. It is the authors' hope in writing this article that it will launch a process across all Land-Grant universities whereby it can honor the spirit of a statement made by one of the tribal leaders: "Let us tell the story of our land and place." In so doing, they wish to create a platform that supports the advocacy for reparative activities such as the investment in 1994--1862 Land-Grant partnerships addressed in a previous article (Williams, Gavazzi, Roberts, et al., 2021). What Are College Students' Perceptions about Campus Safety?

Crime and violence on college and university campuses have found their way into the media spotlight. As a result, criminal and violent acts have become issues that warrant research. We discuss literature focused on the potential contributing factors that may lead to violent behavior. Additionally, we review legislation intended to protect students and employees by keeping them updated on criminal activity. We also address institutions' responsibility to promote and ensure a safe learning environment. Last, we examine students' responsibility to self-protect. According to the US Department of Justice (as cited in Flannery & Quinn-Leering, 2000), victimization by a violent crime is increasingly common and the chance of being victimized today by a violent crime is greater than the chance of being injured in a traffic accident. Therefore, one need not speculate on why institutions of higher education are experiencing widespread unlawful activity. Instead, colleges and universities should concentrate on preventing these acts of violence. To understand college students' perceptions regarding campus safety, we surveyed 20 local college students, of whom 55% were female. Respondents ranged in age from 21 to 25. All classes (freshman through senior) were represented, with 85% of respondents enrolled as full-time students.

Mastering Chemistry. Efficacy Research Report

Pearson sought to explore whether the use of Mastering Chemistry, an online tutorial system designed to help students with chemistry concepts, problem-solving skills and quantitative reasoning, is related to students' course scores and exam scores. This Research Report presents findings from two research studies: one correlational study conducted at a highly selective, four-year research university for students enrolled in a general chemistry course; and one quasi-experimental study conducted at Ohio State University, a primarily residential, land-grant public university known for academic research in science, for students enrolled in General Chemistry I and II. The aim in using mainly correlational study designs was to seek out possible relationships between the use of Mastering Chemistry and students' course and exam scores to identify areas of focus for potential future research using more rigorous causal study designs. The findings appear alongside details of the research studies, including descriptions of the samples studied, methods of analysis, results, limitations and generalizability, and notes on possible future research. The report also summarizes the context surrounding the findings, including the research that informed the design and development of the product, the history of the product in the market, how educators use the product, and its intended outcomes.

Opportunity and Purpose: Outreach's Changing Mission
Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement. 2010 14(3):5-12.
This article presents remarks by E. Gordon Gee, the president of the Ohio State University, at the 10th annual National Outreach Scholarship Conference. He talks about his realization that the time had come for higher education institutions to reinvigorate and expand their commitment to communities. Upon returning to Ohio State, he thought hard about first principles, about their land-grant institutions' founding ideals, and about this nation's particular moment in time. The sum of the equation was this: America's public universities, and particularly its land-grant institutions, must reach out as never before to fully understand the needs in their communities and to fully address them--as partners, together. Gee emphasizes the issues that institutions face today as they engage their larger communities and the efforts to work in partnership to resolve them. He concludes that like him, people in the academe have much to do--in their own institutions and in collaboration with one another. They must be mindful always of the sacred trust that is theirs to nurture and to pass along to those who will follow them on this earth. That, finally, is their common obligation and their common purpose. (Contains 1 endnote.)

An Examination of Government Relations Offices and State Funding

With soaring uncertainty surrounding the financing of public higher education, institutions are faced with developing strategies that will enable them to effectively compete for state funding. One component to cultivating resources and relationships for colleges and universities are through government relations organizations. Utilized for developing rapport with political leaders and policy decision-makers, these groups are relied upon to prioritize higher education among the agendas of elected and appointed officials. As a result, the study examined the size of government relations offices serving major land-grant institutions, and, provided an analysis of the job responsibilities shared among personnel. In turn, findings were compared with levels of state funding corresponding to institutions participating in the research. Although the purpose of the study was to draw inferences concerning the effectiveness of personnel composition within these government relations groups, the overarching goal was to help establish a foundation for further exploration--and explanation--on higher education's involvement with government relations. Urban universities are a key resource for municipal government, businesses, community organizations, and citizens to foster partnerships for successful renewal of distressed urban neighborhoods. From its experience over the past decade, the Ohio State University has created a successful model for engagement with its neighborhoods and the City of Columbus. This model is grounded in market-based revitalization and includes community-based planning, a shared vision for renewal, multiple sources of funding, and a focus on long-term results. In turn, this engagement has invigorated the university's mission as a land-grant institution in the twenty-first century.
