Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more.Renaissance Futurities considers the intersections between artistic rebirth, the new science, and European imperialism in the global early modern world. Charlene Villaseñor Black and Mari-Tere Álvarez take as inspiration the work of Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), prolific artist and inventor, and other polymaths such as philosopher Giulio “Delminio” Camillo (1480–1544), physician and naturalist Francisco Hernández de Toledo (1514–1587), and writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547 –1616 ). This concern with futurity is inspired by the Renaissance itself, a period defined by visions of the future, as well as by recent theorizing of temporality in Renaissance and Queer Studies. This transdisciplinary volume is at the cutting edge of the humanities, medical humanities, scientific discovery, and avant-garde artistic expression.

Todo ser vivo necesita interactuar con el medio que lo rodea, generando un tipo de información que lo lleva a crear un acto de comunicación. Así, se desarrollan una serie de lenguajes que los llevan a comunicarse con la comunidad. Por ejemplo, en el caso de los animales se puede observar cómo emiten diferentes sonidos para realizar cualquier tipo de acción o, incluso, para advertir de cualquier peligro a su alrededor.En el caso de los seres humanos, desde nuestros orígenes, hemos generado gestos y expresiones que varían de un lugar a otro, así como también hemos elaborado sistemas de comunicación basados en señales para poder comunicarnos. No obstante, en el caso de los seres huma-nos, todo esto va más allá, en tanto que hemos sido capaces de desarrollar un sistema de comunicación verbal y escrito, otorgándole convenciones que varían de un lugar a otro. Siguiendo esta línea, nuestra forma de comunicación ha ido más allá de la simbología, hasta tal punto de elaborar un sistema de símbolos sonoros y gráficos que se articulan de diferentes formas con el fin de elaborar un sistema complejo de estructuras que nos llevan a comentar nuestro presente, pasado y futuro, lo que se ha denominado lengua. Además de todo esto, hay que tener en cuenta el factor geográfico, puesto que no se puede hablar en exclusiva de una única lengua. En este contexto, la lengua o las lenguas va-rían en función de los fenómenos socioculturales que la rodean, es decir, existe una relación intrínseca entre lengua, lenguaje y sociedad, teniendo en cuenta sus usos y el contexto en el que se desenvuelven.

Sabemos por Umberto Eco que el sentido de esa obra abierta está en manos de quienes van a leerla. De otra forma, los libros serán solo un espacio en nuestra estantería o en nuestro disco duro, pero no estimularán el debate en la comunidad científica y, mucho menos, en la ciudadanía. Además, aunque se cuenta con algún trabajo en portugués, italiano o inglés, la mayor parte de estas investigaciones están escritas en español y, por ello, deben divulgarse en el marco de la comunidad iberoamericana con especial interés. Son trabajos recientes, redactados durante una de las mayores crisis de la humanidad, pero no dejan de ser un instante en el devenir de un gran esfuerzo individual y colectivo, también institucional en el caso de universidades, grupos o proyectos de investigación. Su contenido es testimonio de todo lo bueno de lo que somos capaces. Es la memoria de nuestras inquietudes intelectuales y, por lo tanto, humanas.

Consientes que sólo a través de las acciones pretéritas podremos comprender el desarrollo actual y plantear sociedades inclusivas y potencialmente seguras en un futuro sustentable, nuestro propósito es mirar a las civilizaciones desde las Ciencias Humanas planteando nuevas preguntas, revisitando las fuentes, buscando nuevos caminos de análisis y fundamentalmente estableciendo un diálogo pluridisciplinar que no implica la suma de saberes, sino la interacción de los mismos para enriquecer el análisis y potenciar los resultados.

La sociedad contemporánea se enfrenta, parca en ropajes, al vendaval provocado por diversas crisis simultáneas: crisis sanitaria, crisis económica, crisis política, crisis educativa, crisis climática, etc. En esta situación, corresponde al mundo de la academia, al ámbito erudito e intelectual el tratar de hacerse valer y demostrar la importancia que tiene para afrontar el desafío del futuro. En la biografía de cualquier persona suele haber alguien que ejerce una influencia benéfica especial.Esos individuos actúan como luces en el camino que orientan en las, a menudo, procelosas situaciones vitales que nos toca vivir. Precisamente eso es lo que nos proponemos en este volumen que, a falta de un término más adecuado, podemos calificar como monumental. Este libro tiene por objeto el análisis de ciertos aspectos vinculados con la mejora de la actividad docente. La estructura del libro está dividida en cuatro apartados. El primero de ellos, abordara las cuestiones vinculadas a la educación mediática y la cultura de la participación, haciendo hincapié en el papel de las redes sociales, los y las influencers, el aprendizaje expandido, colaborativo y abierto. El apartado segundo, trata acerca de relevancia de la evaluación, la gestión y las políticas educativas que son necesarias para la adecuada implementación de los distintos modelos docentes en los organismos e instituciones educativas. El apartado tercero, ahonda en la cuestión de la docencia de la ciencia en nuestros días y, en particular, dada su relevancia social, de las ciencias de la salud. No es posible, a la altura de nuestro tiempo, concebir una sociedad justa, equitativa y educada, si no es en el seno de una colectividad que aboga por el cuidado de su salud, que valora el cuidado del organismo en su conjunto y, opta, de entre todos los caminos posibles, por hacer valido el lema latino: Mens sana in corpore sano. Por último, el estudio de las cuestiones anteriores requiere, como un prerrequisito transversal, el manejo correcto y la adecuada formación en la búsqueda, revisión y análisis documental. A ello se dedica, con extensión, el cuarto y último apartado del libro.

The European Experience brings together the expertise of nearly a hundred historians from eight European universities to internationalise and diversify the study of modern European history, exploring a grand sweep of time from 1500 to 2000. Offering a valuable corrective to the Anglocentric narratives of previous English-language textbooks, scholars from all over Europe have pooled their knowledge on comparative themes such as identities, cultural encounters, power and citizenship, and economic development to reflect the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the European experience. Rather than another grand narrative, the international author teams offer a multifaceted and rich perspective on the history of the continent of the past 500 years. Each major theme is dissected through three chronological sub-chapters, revealing how major social, political and historical trends manifested themselves in different European settings during the early modern (1500–1800), modern (1800–1900) and contemporary period (1900–2000). This resource is of utmost relevance to today's history students in the light of ongoing internationalisation strategies for higher education curricula, as it delivers one of the first multi-perspective and truly ‘European'analyses of the continent's past. Beyond the provision of historical content, this textbook equips students with the intellectual tools to interrogate prevailing accounts of European history, and enables them to seek out additional perspectives in a bid to further enrich the discipline.

Educated at Melbourne University, he was a public servant, high school teacher, television and radio performer, university lecturer and lawyer before serving as a Labor MP in the Victorian Parliament 1972–77 and the Australian House of Representatives 1977–98. He took a leading role in reviving the Australian film industry, abolishing the death penalty in Australia, and was the first politician to raise public awareness of global warming, the'post-industrial'society, the IT revolution, biotechnology, the rise of ‘the Third Age'and the need to preserve Antarctica as a wilderness. In the Hawke Government, he was Minister for Science 1983–90, Prices and Consumer Affairs 1987, Small Business 1987–90 and Customs 1988–90. He became a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO, Paris 1991–95 and National President of the Australian Labor Party 1992–2000, 2005–06. He was Deputy Chairman of the Constitutional Convention 1998. His books include Decades of Decision 1860– (1965), Joseph II (1968), Age of Apocalypse (1975), and he edited The Penalty is Death (1968). Sleepers, Wake!: Technology and the Future of Work was published by Oxford University Press in 1982, became a bestseller and has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Swedish and braille. The fourth edition was published in 1995. Knowledge Courage Leadership, a collection of speeches and essays, appeared in 2016.He received a DSc for his services to science in 1988 and a DLitt in 1993 for his work on information theory. Elected FTSE (1992), FAHA (1993), FAA (1996) and FASSA (2003), he is the only person to have become a Fellow of four of Australia's five learned Academies. Awarded an AO in 1993, named as one of Australia's 100 ‘living national treasures'in 1997, he was elected a Visiting Fellow Commoner of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1999. His autobiography, A Thinking Reed, was published in 2006 and The Shock of Recognition, about music and literature, in 2016. In 2014 he received an AC for services ‘as a leading intellectual in Australian public life'. What Is to Be Done was published by Scribe in 2020.

A Universal Scheme for Wyner--Ziv Coding of Discrete Sources.

We consider the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) problem of lossy compression where the decompressor observes a noisy version of the source, whose statistics are unknown. A new family of WZ coding algorithms is proposed and their universal optimality is proven. Compression consists of sliding-window processing followed by Lempel-Ziv (LZ) compression, while the decompressor is based on a modification of the discrete universal denoiser (DUDE) algorithm to take advantage of side information. The new algorithms not only universally attain the fundamental limits, but also suggest a paradigm for practical WZ coding. The effectiveness of our approach is illustrated with experiments on binary images, and English text using a low complexity algorithm motivated by our class of universally optimal WZ codes.
