Wie erklärt man den Aufstieg der USA von einer britischen Kolonie zur globalen Hegemonialmacht in einem Zeitraum von knapp 140 Jahren von der Revolution bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg? Welche Bedeutung hat dabei die nach dem Bürgerkrieg einsetzende forcierte „Nationsbildung“, die im Kontext der Besiedelung des Westens, der Etablierung eines kapitalistischen Systems à l'Américaine, der Ausbildung eines sich von Europa deutlich unterscheidenden Systems der Regulierung von Arbeit und Kapital, der nicht Durchsetzbarkeit sozialistischer Ideen und der Politik des „small government “ und „laissez-faire“ stattfand? Kurz: Welche Bedeutung hatte die spezifisch amerikanische Entwicklung mit ihrem Fokus auf den innenpolitischen und innergesellschaftlichen Problemkontext für die Entstehung bzw. Entwicklung der diskursiven Formation des „Empire for Liberty“, das sich spätestens mit dem Spanisch-Amerikanischen Krieg in eine außenpolitische Maxime übersetzte und handlungsleitend für die offensive amerikanische Hegemonialpolitik nach dem Weltkrieg wurde, ja das Empire zu einem „Way of Life“ machte? Obwohl der Erste Weltkrieg gemeinhin als Beginn einer amerikanischen Dominanz in der Weltpolitik gesehen wird, argumentiert M. Michaela Hampf, dass der Aufstieg der Vereinigten Staaten zu einer imperialen Macht bereits nach 1865 erfolgte. Methodisch geht die Untersuchung insofern neue Wege als zur Erklärung des „amerikanischen Sonderwegs“ die sozialwissenschaftliche Theorie der Pfadabhängigkeit herangezogen wird. Erklärt werden soll nicht die expansive amerikanische Außenpolitik als konsequente Anwendung amerikanischer Prinzipien, sondern die Pfade, die dazu führten, dass die amerikanische Politik bereit war, einen Weg zu beschreiten, der eine Abkehr von eben jenen Grundsätzen darstellte.

William Stimpson and the Golden Age of American Natural History

William Stimpson was at the forefront of the American natural history community in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Stimpson displayed an early affinity for the sea and natural history , and after completing an apprenticeship with famed naturalist Louis Agassiz, he became one of the first professionally trained naturalists in the United States. In 1852, twenty-year-old Stimpson was appointed naturalist of the United States North Pacific Exploring Expedition, where he collected and classified hundreds of marine animals. Upon his return, he joined renowned naturalist Spencer F. Baird at the Smithsonian Institution to create its department of invertebrate zoology. He also founded and led the irreverent and fun-loving Megatherium Club, which included many notable naturalists. In 1865, Stimpson focused on turning the Chicago Academy of Sciences into one of the largest and most important museums in the country. Tragically, the museum was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and Stimpson died of tuberculosis soon after, before he could restore his scientific legacy. This first-ever biography of William Stimpson situates his work in the context of his time. As one of few to collaborate with both Agassiz and Baird, Stimpson's life provides insight into the men who shaped a generation of naturalists—the last before intense specialization caused naturalists to give way to biologists. Historians of science and general readers interested in biographies, science, and history will enjoy this compelling biography.

Presenting an unprecedented, integrated view of migration in North America, this interdisciplinary collection of essays illuminates the movements of people within and between Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States over the past two centuries. Several essays discuss recent migrations from Central America as well. In the introduction, Dirk Hoerder provides a sweeping historical overview of North American societies in the Atlantic world. He also develops and advocates what he and Nora Faires call “transcultural societal studies,” an interdisciplinary approach to migration studies that combines migration research across disciplines and at the local, regional, national, and transnational levels. The first African American to publish a book on any subject, poet Phillis Wheatley (1753?–1784) has long been denigrated by literary critics who refused to believe that a black woman could produce such dense, intellectual work, let alone influence Romantic-period giants like Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Indeed, Thomas Jefferson once declared that “the compositions published under her name are below dignity of criticism.” In recent decades, however, Wheatley's work has come under new scrutiny as the literature of the eighteenth century and the impact of African American literature have been reconceived. In these never-before-published essays, fourteen prominent Wheatley scholars consider her work from a variety of angles, affirming her rise into the first rank of American writers. The pieces in the first section show that perhaps the most substantial measure of Wheatley's multilayered texts resides in her deft handling of classical materials. The contributors consider Wheatley's references to Virgil's Aeneid and Georgics and to the feminine figure Dido as well as her subversive critique of white readers attracted to her adaptation of familiar classics. They also discuss Wheatley's use of the Homeric Trojan horse and eighteenth-century verse to mask her ambitions for freedom and her treatment of the classics as political tools. Engaging Wheatley's multilayered texts with innovative approaches, the essays in the second section recontextualize her rich manuscripts and demonstrate how her late-eighteenth-century works remain both current and timeless. They ponder Wheatley's verse within the framework of queer theory, the concepts of political theorist Hannah Arendt, rhetoric, African studies, eighteenth-century “salon culture,” and the theoretics of imagination. Together, these essays reveal the depth of Phillis Wheatley's literary achievement and present concrete evidence that her extant oeuvre merits still further scrutiny. John C. Shields is Distinguished Professor of English at Illinois State University. He is the editor of The Collected Works of Phillis Wheatley and author of The American Aeneas: Classical Origins of the American Self, a Choice Outstanding Academic Book; Phillis Wheatley and the Romantics; and Phillis Wheatley's Poetics of Liberation; and awarded honorable mention in competition for the American Comparative Literature Association's Harry Levin Prize. As well, Shields serves as director of the Center for Classicism and American Culture and General Editor for the series of monographs on Classicism in American Culture to be published by the University of Tennessee Press. Eric D. Lamore is an assistant professor of English at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, and a contributor to The Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poets and Poetry.

The frequency and intensity of dust storms in Iran has increased significantly in recent years. This study identifies the sources of dust using hybrid algorithms – probability density-index of entropy (PD-IOE), probability density-radial basic function neural network (PD-RBFNN), probability density-self-organizing map (PDSOM), and probability density-fuzzy ARTMAP (PD-FAM). Hybrid models employed several effective environmental factors: land cover, slope, soil, land use, wind speed, geology, temperature, and precipitation. A random selection of 70% of the data points were used for training the spatial models and the remainder (30%) were used to test the effectiveness of the models to determine the best algorithm. The results reveal that the PD-FAM algorithm produced the most accurate predictions of dust sources. Geology, slope, and soil were the factors that were most effective predictors of dust generation in eastern Iran. Comprehensive management is needed to manage dust production in Iran and these findings may ease identification of locations most likely to produce dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
