This article presents several works about author George Eliot. Biographies such as Simon Dewes' Marian: The Life of George Eliot and J. L. May's George Eliot may purport to recount the salient incidents of Eliot's life, but they offer only scanty documentation and no bibliographies. Elizabeth S. Haldane's George Eliot and Her Times: A Victorian Study plainly declares that its purpose is not to concentrate attention upon the actual events of Eliot's life but rather to reevaluate the relationship between her writings and the general aim and effort of her epoch.

ELIOT, George.
Continuum Encyclopedia of British Literature. Letter E, p303-305. 3p.
This article presents a biography of English author George Eliot, pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans. Eliot is indubitably the most highly regarded 19th-century woman writer. Her work was highly acclaimed in her own lifetime, but went out of fashion toward the end of the Victorian period and only commenced on the road to critical recovery with the publication in 1948 of F. R. Leavis's highly influential The Great Tradition, which placed Eliot in a tradition of novelists whose concerns are to eschew complacent confusions of judgment but whose texts are distinguished by a vital capacity for experience, a kind of reverent openness for life, and a marked moral intensity.

Literary Citizenship in Scandinavia in the Long Eighteenth Century
2023; Vol. 00001
Sheds new light on European and regional book markets, the development of a public sphere and the impact of new media on intellectual, social, religious and political change. How do you become a citizen? Ever since printing was introduced, being a member of society increasingly involved reading and writing: for sociability and belonging, instruction and entertainment, profit and charity, spiritual awakening and political debate. Literary practices shaped and changed identities and the organisation of society during the Long Eighteenth Century. In Scandinavia, this happened locally, as well as transnationally - reading, writing and producing texts involved entanglements within and beyond the borders of the Northern European periphery of Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Focusing on'literary citizenship', this volume uncovers the different ways in which engagements with print have mediated and established networks and communities, identities and agencies of multiple sorts in an interconnected media landscape. The result is a complex and intriguing history of the book in the Scandinavian region. This history is, on the one hand, influenced by a European market and tradition. On the other hand, it offers an important and different case of regional and local adaptation, marked by what has been termed a'Northern Enlightenment'. This book will be of interest to scholars of European enlightenment studies and to those who are interested in the continuing debates surrounding print culture and history. This book is available in digital format as Open Access under the Creative Commons license CC-BY-NC. This book and the research upon which it is based was supported by funds from The Research Council of Norway and the National Library of Norway. A Short Media History of English Literature
2022
This book explores the history of literature as a history of changing media and modes of communication, from manuscript to print, from the codex to the computer, and from paper to digital platforms. It argues that literature has evolved, and continues to evolve, in sync with material forms and formats that engage our senses in multiple ways. Because literary experiences are embedded in, and enabled by, media, the book focuses on literature as a changing combination of material and immaterial features. The principal agents of this history are no longer genres, authors, and texts but configurations of media and technologies. In telling the story of these combinations from prehistory to the present, Ingo Berensmeyer distinguishes between three successive dominants of media usage that have shaped literary history: performance, representation, and connection. Using English literature as a test case for a long view of media history, this book combines an unusual bird's eye view across periods with illuminating readings of key texts. It will prove an invaluable resource for teaching and for independent study in English or comparative literature and media studies.

Cherokee Women in Charge : Female Power and Leadership in American Indian Nations of Eastern North America
2022
Cherokee women wielded significant power, and history demonstrates that in what is now America, indigenous women often bore the greater workload, both inside and outside the home. During the French and Indian War, Cherokee women resisted a chief's authority, owned family households, were skilled artisans, produced plentiful crops, mastered trade negotiations, and prepared chiefs'feasts. Cherokee culture was lost when the Cherokee Nation began imitating the American form of governance to gain political favor, and white colonists reduced indigenous women's power. This book recounts long-standing Cherokee traditions and their rich histories. It demonstrates Cherokee and indigenous women as independent and strong individuals through feminist and historical perspectives. Readers will find that these women were far ahead of their time and held their own in many remarkable ways.

From Romanticism to Realism, the 19th century saw a flourishing of literary movements, as well as the arrival of several now-revered luminaries on the literary scene. Authors experimented with new styles that elevated the novel as a significant literary form, while new techniques and themes were also introduced into poetry and drama. These compelling profiles examine the lives of some of the 19th century's greatest writers—Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Leo Tolstoy, to name just a few—and reveal the remarkable stories behind the works they crafted.
