Young Goodman Brown and Other Stories
2018
Described by Herman Melville as being “as deep as Dante”, ‘Young Goodman Brown'is set during the Salem witch trials and features the sort of narrative ambiguities and troubling uncertainties over the reality of events that Hawthorne was known for, leading readers to ponder what they have read long after the last page has been turned. Rich in allegory and symbolism, and suffused with darkness, tragedy, satire and the supernatural, the tales in this collection, written by a master of the short-story genre, delve into the conflict between good and evil, explore the concept of Original Sin and bring to life the moralistic and superstitious early days of the New England colonies.

Ethical Dilemma in The Scarlet Letter and Ethical Choices of Hester Prynne. (English)
Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most influential novelists in the 19th century in the United States. His work The Scarlet Letter mainly tells the tragic ethical story of the heroine Hester because of the immoral love during the colonial North America. It is the masterpiece of American romantic novel. The paper, from the perspective of ethical literary criticism, returns to the historical scene, analyzes Hester's ethical choices under a specific ethical dilemma and complex ethical identity, and explores the inevitability of her ethical return in the constant conflict and struggle between her free will and rational will. After that we can further search out the ethical value in the novel, which is to enlighten people to abide by the social ethical norms, otherwise they must wash away their sins and realize the ethical return through complete confession.
