Do the Emotions Evoked by Interface Design Factors Affect the User's Intention to Continue Using the Smartwatch? The Mediating Role of Quality Perceptions.
International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. Feb2023, Vol. 39 Issue 3, p546-561. 16p. 4 Diagrams, 14 Charts, 2 Graphs.
Based on the S-O-R model as the overall theoretical framework, this study combined objective factors in interface design with subjective perceptions, and investigated whether the emotions evoked by interface design factors would affect user's intention to continue using the smartwatch through two stages. The first stage, we used two-way ANOVA to analyze whether symmetry and complexity in interface design have different effects on user's emotions. The findings found that asymmetrical interface designs tend to be more likely to evoke emotional arousal, whereas symmetrical interface designs are more likely to evoke emotional valence. Moreover, complex interface designs are more likely to evoke emotional arousal and valence than simple interface designs. The second stage, the bootstrapping method was adopted to examine the mediating effect of quality perceptions, and to explore the influence of emotions evoked by interface design factors on the user's intention to continue using smartwatch. The results found that users' hedonic and pragmatic qualities fully mediate the effect of emotional arousal and valence on continuous usage intention of the smartwatch. Moreover, it is important to address the relationship between users and products through emotions and quality perceptions evoked by interface design factors to increase user experience and enjoyment. Furthermore, it is suggested to design and manufacture products with strong emotional attachment, which is also one of the effective methods to solve some environmental issues caused by consumer electronics. USB-A TO USB-C At some point, you'll inevitably need to connect a USB accessory to a new device that lacks USB-A ports. I have a few of these 10-foot USB extenders (fave.co/41tY2Ly), which I use to recharge my console game controllers from the couch and run a spare USB port from my desktop computer to the keyboard tray under my desk. It's still the most foolproof way to route audio from one device to another (though the demise of smartphone headphone jacks means you'll probably want a USB-C or Lightning adapter on hand as well.). 6 big questions for generative AI.
MIT Technology Review. Jan/Feb2024, Vol. 127 Issue 1, p30-37. 8p. 3 Color Photographs, 3 Cartoon or Caricatures.
Generative AI, a new technology, is gaining popularity and raising questions about its future impact. One major concern is bias, as AI models trained on real-world data often encode and reinforce biases related to gender and race. Copyright issues have also arisen, with artists and writers suing tech companies for alleged infringement. The impact on jobs is a topic of discussion, with concerns that white-collar workers may be at risk. However, some argue that AI can enhance job performance. Generative AI has the potential to revolutionize image and video production, but there are concerns about inequality and misinformation. The misuse of generative models for creating fake text and images is a growing concern, as is the environmental impact of development costs. The debate surrounding the risks and benefits of AI will continue, with calls to address issues such as bias, job displacement, and misinformation. [Extracted from the article]

REVIEW: iPHONE 14 PRO: A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE.
Macworld - Digital Edition. Nov2022, Vol. 39 Issue 11, p70-87. 18p. 14 Color Photographs, 2 Graphs.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the about same size as the 12 Pro Max, as well as the iPhone 13 Pro Max it replaces (fave.co/3xWPTlb). And the iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted 3 hours and 43 minutes longer than the iPhone 14 Pro - that's 30 percent more battery life from a battery that is 35 percent larger than the smaller iPhone 14 Pro. However, if battery life is your main reason for choosing a large iPhone, Apple does have another iPhone that has recently arrived - the iPhone 14 Plus, which according to Apple's estimates can beat the 14 Pro Max in terms of battery life. The yearly iPhone release, and indeed most smartphone releases, have gotten kind of boring: The latest model is a little faster, the camera's better, and maybe there's some stand-out gimmick that will feature in all the ads but won't really improve the way you use your phone. Revisiting the Experience Machine: A Philosophical Note on the Limits of Experience Design.
Design Issues. Spring2023, Vol. 39 Issue 2, p14-26. 13p.
This study explores the notion of experience, as used in "experience design," based on American philosopher Robert Nozick's idea of an experience machine and Marc Hassenzahl's notion of experience design. Hassenzahl epitomizes experience as pleasure or fulfillment of needs—an idea that Nozick challenges as he claims that the world people engage with matters in a way that is not reducible to pleasure alone. Nozick's observation, I argue, indicates a sense of care in the broader concept of experience design. I explore this sense of care using John Haugeland's conception of existential commitment, which then necessitates a deepening of the notion of Hassenzahl's experience by connecting it with a sense of commitment and responsibility. This connection makes experience design, then, a concern and care for the normative powers of design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evaluation method of college teachers' morality considering intelligent emotion recognition and data mining algorithm.
Applied Artificial Intelligence. 2024, Vol. 37 Issue 1, p1-23. 23p.
The core of teaching consists of four basic values: dignity, truthfulness, fairness, responsibility & freedom. All teaching is founded on ethics – whether it be the teacher-student relationship, pluralism, or a teacher's relationship with their work. This article combines intelligent emotion detection technology and a data mining algorithm to develop a model for evaluating college professors' morals to discover an effective way to do so. This study examines the moral hazard game model of concealed behaviors of instructors with overconfidence in four risk preference combinations based on fair fundamental assumptions and comparisons with rational teachers with the same risk preference. In addition, this research formulates the ideal incentive contract for each circumstance. It creates a model of the assessment system of college professors' morality in conjunction with their real teaching environment. In addition, the simulation model is used to assess the influence of the assessment system on the morality of college instructors. The experimental investigation indicates that the assessment technique of college professors' morality presented in this work, taking intelligent emotion detection and data mining algorithm into account, has some influence. The model and data mining algorithm are applied to evaluate college teachers' morality, the method effect is statistically evaluated, and the results showing the superiority of the proposed method are obtained. RESEARCHER ACCESS TO SOCIAL MEDIA DATA: LESSONS FROM CLINICAL TRIAL DATA SHARING.
Berkeley Technology Law Journal. 2024, Vol. 39 Issue 1, p111-205. 95p.
For years, social media companies have sparred with lawmakers over how much independent access to platform data they should provide researchers. Sharing data with researchers allows the public to better understand the risks and harms associated with social media, including areas such as misinformation, child safety, and political polarization. Yet researcher access is controversial. Privacy advocates and companies raise the potential privacy threats of researchers using such data irresponsibly. In addition, social media companies raise concerns over trade secrecy: the data these companies hold and the algorithms powered by that data are secretive sources of competitive advantage. This Article shows that one way to navigate this difficult strait is by drawing on lessons from the successful governance program that has emerged to regulate the sharing of clinical trial data. Like social media data, clinical trial data implicates both individual privacy and trade secrecy concerns. Nonetheless, clinical trial data's governance regime was gradually legislated, regulated, and brokered into existence, managing the interests of industry, academia, and other stakeholders. The result is a functionally successful (albeit imperfect) clinical trial data-sharing ecosystem. Part II sketches the status quo of researchers' access to social media data and provides a novel taxonomy of the problems that arise under this regime. Part III reviews the legal structures governing sharing of clinical trial data and traces the history of scandals, investigations, industry protest, and legislative response that gave rise to the mix of mandated sharing and experimental programs we have today. Part IV applies lessons from clinical trial data sharing to social media data and charts a strategic course forward. Three primary lessons emerge: first, the benefits of research on otherwise secret data are cascading and unpredictable; second, law without institutions to implement the law is insufficient; and, third, data access regimes must be tailored to the different sorts of data they make available. SKIN IN THE GAME: THE TRANSFORMATIONAL POTENTIAL OF DECENTRALIZED AUTONOMOUS ORGANIZATIONS.
MIS Quarterly. Mar2024, Vol. 48 Issue 1, p245-271. 27p.
Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs)--collectively owned human-machine systems deployed on a blockchain that self-govern through smart contracts and the voluntary contributions of autonomous community members--exhibit the potential to facilitate collective action in managing digital commons. Yet the promise of decentralization and collective action is difficult to sustain. To this end, this paper critically examines the transformational potential of DAOs in the case of decentralized finance. Using a polycentric governance lens, we contribute to the literature on technology-enabled forms of organizing with a model explaining the transformational potential of DAOs to facilitate collective action in digital commons. Our study highlights that (1) DAOs are a new form of organizing enabled by blockchain technology in which individuals are free to pursue their objectives within a general system of rules enforced by smart contracts, (2) collective action for managing digital commons can be sustained through a set of three mechanisms--sustained participation, collective direction, and scaled organizing, and (3) DAOs tend to strike a balance between centralized and fully decentralized or community-based governance by implementing a polycentric governance system involving a combination of human and machine agency that creates skin in the game. In this paper I reflect on the community entry phases of doing a critical ethnography in a traditional Zulu community in a deep rural part of South Africa. I present my reflections in the form of confessional narratives on community entry and on how an Information Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) project was introduced in the community. Drawing on a basic principle of doing social science research, I ask: In what ways should I achieve self-emancipation, in order to ensure the on-going emancipation and empowerment of the people I engage with? I also ask: How should one do critically reflexive community entry and ICT4D project introduction in communities that embrace a people-orientated worldview? The paper is practice-orientated in that it demonstrates critical self-reflexive community entry in a particular ICT4D project situation, how community entry encounters informed follow-up work, and how cultural interpreters empowered me to do community entry successfully. Methodologically, the paper contributes by demonstrating the value of using narrative examples to represent virtuoso expertise of how I developed knowledge of self-reflexivity while excavating hidden social meanings from an ICT4D project situation.
