Jews and the Racial State: Legacies of the Holocaust in Apartheid South Africa, 1945-60.
Jewish Social Studies. Apr2010, Vol. 16 Issue 3, p32-64. 33p.
This article is part of a larger study exploring how the Holocaust shaped responses to apartheid in South Africa, a weighty question given that country's identity as the quintessential racial state after 1945. During the apartheid years (1948-94), memory of the Holocaust was regularly invoked by South Africans of diverse backgrounds and political motivations. Where some saw obvious parallels, however, others drew starkly different conclusions. The article focuses on the period from the war years until 1960, a formative phase during which South Africans adapted to the new regime and memory narratives began to be fashioned. Shifting patterns of discourse reveal, on one end of the spectrum, a gradual rapprochement between Afrikaners and Jews based in part on a willful amnesia about the Nazi period, and, on the other end, an anti-racist movement beginning to identify itself as 'the most important moral battle in the world since the defeat of Nazism.' South Africa's Jewish Complex.
Jewish Social Studies. Spring2004, Vol. 10 Issue 3, p123-142. 20p.
The article analyzes the performative expression of contemporary Jewish identity and self- representation in South Africa in the postapartheid era. The discussion reveals telling characteristics about how the Jewish community sees itself and its position in South African society. Playing off the classic and problematic dichotomy of Jewish power and powerlessness, South Africa's Jewish complex translates that dichotomy into a local idiom with unique and innovative characteristics. In addition, analyzing this highly localized performance of Jewish identity on the frontier may raise important issues of a more general nature. In particular, such an analysis reveals the interaction between Jews' political anxieties and their public personae as alternatively powerful and powerless.

African Initiated Christianity and the Decolonisation of Development : Sustainable Development in Pentecostal and Independent Churches
2020
This book investigates the substantial and growing contribution which African Independent and Pentecostal Churches are making to sustainable development in all its manifold forms. Moreover, this volume seeks to elucidate how these churches reshape the very notion of sustainable development and contribute to the decolonisation of development. Fostering both overarching and comparative perspectives, the book includes chapters on West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso) and Southern Africa (Zimbabwe and South Africa). It aims to open up a subfield focused on African Initiated Christianity within the religion and development discourse, substantially broadening the scope of the existing literature. Written predominantly by scholars from the African continent, the chapters in this volume illuminate potentials and perspectives of African Initiated Christianity, combining theoretical contributions, essays by renowned church leaders, and case studies focusing on particular churches or regional contexts. While the contributions in this book focus on the African continent, the notion of development underlying the concept of the volume is deliberately wide and multidimensional, covering economic, social, ecological, political, and cultural dimensions. Therefore, the book will be useful for the community of scholars interested in religion and development as well as researchers within African studies, anthropology, development studies, political science, religious studies, sociology of religion, and theology. It will also be a key resource for development policymakers and practitioners.

The Making of an Eastern European Jewish Legacy in Contemporary South Africa.
Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies. Fall2006, Vol. 25 Issue 1, p78-89. 12p.
The article reflects on the role of Jews during the struggle to end Apartheid in South Africa in 1994. It explores the assumption that an Eastern European Jewish heritage lends itself to a concern with justice. It also calls for a history of South African Jews that includes occlusions and ellipses, as well as a diversity of South African Jewish voices. The author also engages with the Byzantine function of Eastern European Jewish memories for contemporary South Africans.

Holocaust Denial. The Politics of Perfidy provides a graphic and compelling global panorama of past and present variations on this toxic phenomenon. The volume examines right and left wing French negationism, post-Communist Holocaust deniers in Eastern-Europe, the spread of denial to Australia, Canada, South-Africa and even to Japan. Leading scholarly experts also explore the close connection between Holocaust denial, global conspiracy theories, antisemitism and radical anti-Zionism– especially in Iran and the Arab world.

Colonialism and the Jews
2017
The lively essays collected here explore colonial history, culture, and thought as it intersects with Jewish studies. Connecting the Jewish experience with colonialism to mobility and exchange, diaspora, internationalism, racial discrimination, and Zionism, the volume presents the work of Jewish historians who recognize the challenge that colonialism brings to their work and sheds light on the diverse topics that reflect the myriad ways that Jews engaged with empire in modern times. Taken together, these essays reveal the interpretive power of the'Imperial Turn'and present a rethinking of the history of Jews in colonial societies in light of postcolonial critiques and destabilized categories of analysis. A provocative discussion forum about Zionism as colonialism is also included.

Beyond the Death of God : Religion in 21st Century International Politics
2022
This volume offers a nuanced picture with specific instances of religion and politics in Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu contexts, broadly presenting the phenomenon of religion and politics via country and thematic case studies. Qualitative, quantitative, material, philosophical, and theological analyses draw upon social theory to show how (and why) religion matters deeply in each time and place. The authors and contributors demonstrate that religion is a significant force that drives societies and polities around the world, and that a radical change in the Western understanding of value-driven global politics is needed. Beyond the Death of God offers new, local voices to Western audiences—through essays that suggest the need for an appreciation of Divinity as a quintessence holding a significant place in the hearts, minds, social orders, and political organization of polities around the world.

#identity : Hashtagging Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Nation
2019
Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has served as a major platform for political performance, social justice activism, and large-scale public debates over race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and nationality. It has empowered minoritarian groups to organize protests, articulate often-underrepresented perspectives, and form community. It has also spread hashtags that have been used to bully and silence women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. #identity is among the first scholarly books to address the positive and negative effects of Twitter on our contemporary world. Hailing from diverse scholarly fields, all contributors are affiliated with The Color of New Media, a scholarly collective based at the University of California, Berkeley. The Color of New Media explores the intersections of new media studies, critical race theory, gender and women's studies, and postcolonial studies. The essays in #identity consider topics such as the social justice movements organized through #BlackLivesMatter, #Ferguson, and #SayHerName; the controversies around #WhyIStayed and #CancelColbert; Twitter use in India and Africa; the integration of hashtags such as #nohomo and #onfleek that have become part of everyday online vernacular; and other ways in which Twitter has been used by, for, and against women, people of color, LGBTQ, and Global South communities. Collectively, the essays in this volume offer a critically interdisciplinary view of how and why social media has been at the heart of US and global political discourse for over a decade.
