Enhancing an environmental mindset: The role of living nature metaphors in H. D. Thoreau's Walden, or life in the woods.
International Journal of Language Studies. Oct2023, Vol. 17 Issue 4, p141-158. 18p.
This paper examines the use of living metaphors in two chapters of Walden, Life in the Woods (1854)--namely, "Solitude" and "The Ponds"--by H. D. Thoreau. In these chapters, the rhetorical figure makes a decisive contribution to defining fundamental conceptual structures for the perspective of life and of thought that Thoreau wants to present, producing creative frames that define the metaphorical value of the whole experience at Walden Pond. He uses metaphorical concepts associated with the environment to create nature metaphors with a specific purpose: to bring man closer to nature, and nature closer to man. The analysis refers to Prandi's (2017) theory on conceptual living metaphors; Prandi denies that living metaphorical expressions are extensions of conventional metaphorical structures, arguing instead that living metaphors are the result of conceptual conflict, as they are not supported by shared metaphorical concepts, but derive from complex and conflicting meanings. If living metaphors turn out to be a specific type of conceptual structure, their relationship to conventional metaphors needs to be reconsidered. This view enables an investigation into the use of living metaphor in Walden, where it is configured as a conceptual tool placed in service of the message Thoreau wishes to convey. Many creative metaphors in Walden are more than mere embellishment. They are conceptual structures that highlight conflictual meanings, bringing together conflicting concepts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Networked Solitude: Walden, or Life in Modern Communications.
Texas Studies in Literature & Language. Fall2016, Vol. 58 Issue 3, p329-351. 23p.
An essay is presented on the critical discussion regarding the relationship of nineteenth-century U.S. poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau with modernity. It also compares Thoreau with sixteenth-century French thinker Michel de Montaigne in terms of their views on solitude. The author discusses the kind of value Thoreau attached to the concept of solitude in spite of the myth of his self-reliance and individualism.

Academy of American Poets -- Biographies of American Poets. 2008, p1-1. 1p.
A biography of the poet and author Henry David Thoreau is presented. He was born in 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. Although his family lived in relative poverty, Thoreau was able to attend Harvard. In 1841, Thoreau was invited to live in the home of his neighbor, Ralph Waldo Emerson. There he began meeting with the group now known as the Transcendentalist Club. It is as a prose writer that Thoreau made his most meaningful contributions, both as a stylist and as a philosopher. Thoreau died of tuberculosis in 1862 in his native Concord.

CONCEPTUAL DISSONANCE BETWEEN THOREAU AND WORDSWORTH'S VIEW ON NATURE AND IMAGINATION.
Studia Universitatis Petru Maior - Philologia. 2013, Issue 15, p87-92. 6p.
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) and William Wordsworth (1770-1850) belong to two different sects. The former is a Transcendentalist or a member of American Romanticism with its unifying account of self and nature, and the latter is an English Romantic poet belonging to a group of poets called the "lake School [or] the lakers" (Ruston, 2007: p. 90-91) who were involved in the appreciation of and dissolution in their natural surroundings. Despite the fact that these two figures have much in common, there are points and junctures where they diverge in their perspectives towards the essential grounds of their parallel philosophies. Through having a look at Thoreau's Walden and Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey, this paper would attempt to present a broad account of the major aspects in which their literary ideas and points of views approach or diverge in regards to nature and imagination.
