Association between mental health and academic performance among university undergraduates: The interacting role of lifestyle behaviors.
International Journal of Methods in Psychiatric Research. Mar2023, Vol. 32 Issue 1, p1-8. 8p. 1 Diagram, 3 Charts, 2 Graphs.
Objectives: Impaired mental health status tends to be associated with poor academic performance, but few prospective studies have examined the association between mental health and academic performance among undergraduates while considering the interacting roles of multiple lifestyle behaviors. Participants and Methods: A total of 1823 Japanese undergraduate students (67% men) were followed up for 4 years. Their mental health status was measured by the six‐item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6). We defined poor academic performance as a grade point average (GPA) <2.0. Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the relationship between the students' mental health status and the incident risk of poor academic performance. Results: Our analyses revealed that impaired mental health status in the first semester of university study significantly predicted an increased incident risk of poor academic performance during the overall undergraduate period. This association remained significant when the health lifestyle behaviors were adjusted, and the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for poor academic performance was 1.62 (1.18–2.23). This significant association disappeared in the low‐lifestyle‐behavior‐risk group. Conclusion: Impaired mental health status in the first semester significantly predicts an increased incident risk of poor academic performance during the undergraduate period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Toward a Potential Solution of the Crisis in Scholarly Publishing: An Academic Research Community Alliance Model.
Journal of Scholarly Publishing. Oct2023, Vol. 54 Issue 4, p569-596. 28p. 1 Diagram, 3 Charts, 2 Graphs, 1 Map.
The authors assess the current status of scholarly publishing and reach the conclusion that the current situation is both in a state of flux and not sustainable. While such an assessment is becoming increasingly well understood, a solution to the problems seemingly does not exist. What even embodies an improvement to the current state of scholarly publishing depends on one's perspective. The authors approach the problem from the perspective of the main producers and consumers of scholarly knowledge—academic and governmental research institutions. From this perspective, they define a set of objectives for scholarly publishing and dissemination of published works, and they assess the challenges with current approaches to meeting these objectives for commercial publishers, professional organization publishers, and academic press publishers. Based on this analysis, the authors propose a new model for academic publishing that might help achieve the stated objectives. The academic research community alliance model suggested is based on the scholarly community taking on the responsibilities of peer review, article production, and knowledge dissemination while acting in an altruistic way of doing so. The proposed approach is described in detail, and both challenges and potential solutions to the impediments to implementing this model are explored. Finally, the authors report on initial efforts to build support for the proposed model, which suggests that meaningful progress on this difficult problem is possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Associations between Family Functioning, Emotion Regulation, Social Support, and Self-injury among Emerging Adult University Students.
Journal of Child & Family Studies. Mar2023, Vol. 32 Issue 3, p846-857. 12p. 2 Diagrams, 1 Chart.
We tested whether difficulties in emotion regulation mediated the association between family functioning and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and whether associations between family functioning, emotion regulation, and NSSI were moderated by social support. University students (N = 846, 75.8% female, 35.5% with a history of NSSI, Mage = 20.76) completed an online questionnaire including well-validated measures of family functioning, emotion regulation, social support, and NSSI. Poor family functioning was positively associated with history of NSSI, but not past 12-month frequency of NSSI. Difficulties in emotion regulation were positively associated with both history of NSSI and frequency of NSSI in the past 12 months. Social support from friends moderated the relationship between difficulties in emotion regulation and history of NSSI; the association was stronger at higher levels of support. Poor family functioning had an indirect effect on both history of NSSI and frequency of NSSI via difficulties in emotion regulation; however, for frequency the indirect effect was only observed when social support from friends and significant others were low. Poor family functioning, difficulties in emotion regulation, and social support work together to predict NSSI engagement among university students. Findings inform potential integration of current theories and design of targeted interventions. Highlights: We investigated family functioning, difficulties in emotion regulation, social support, and NSSI among university students. Poor family functioning and emotion regulation difficulties were positively associated with NSSI. Emotion regulation difficulties mediated relationships between poor family functioning and history and frequency of NSSI. This mediated effect was only present for NSSI frequency when social support from friends and significant others were low. Early intervention may target family functioning; intervention for university students may target emotion regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
