In search of beauty: Anticipating the 'new Renaissance' of Italian cinema: Interview with Lora Guerra.
Journal of Italian Cinema 2023, Vol. 11 Issue 3/4, p667-677, 11p
Lora Guerra (Eleonora Yablochkina) was an Italian writer and screenwriter Tonino Guerra's wife and collaborator. She worked as a translator for a few films produced by her husband with Russian filmmakers, and today she is the curator of Tonino Guerra's Memorial House in Pennabilli (Rimini). In this interview, she discusses the problems of cinema during the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between Italian and Russian cinema, the historical role of Italian cinema and the future of film festivals in Italy. She also reflects on the connection of neorealism with the Italian artistic tradition in literature, theatre and fine arts, on the importance of the 'word' as the basis of a screenplay and on the importance of visual and sound images in poetic cinema (both fiction and documentary). Lastly, Lora Guerra reveals details about the production of the documentary Tempo di viaggio (Voyage in Time) filmed in Italy by Andrei Tarkovsky and Tonino Guerra in summer 1979 and released in 1983. Smoking in movies and adolescent smoking: cross-cultural study in six European countries.
Thorax; Oct2011, Vol. 66 Issue 10, p875-883, 9p, 4 Charts, 3 Graphs
AIM: To investigate whether the association between exposure to smoking in movies and smoking among youth is independent of cultural context. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey of 16 551 pupils recruited in Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Scotland with a mean age of 13.4 years (SD=1.18) and an equal gender distribution. School-based surveys were conducted between November 2009 and June 2010. Using previously validated methods, exposure to movie smoking was estimated from the 250 top-grossing movies of each country (years 2004–2009) and related to ever smoking. RESULTS: Overall, 29% of the sample had tried smoking. The sample quartile (Q) of movie smoking exposure was significantly associated with the prevalence of ever smoking: 14% of adolescents in Q1 had tried smoking, 21% in Q2, 29% in Q3 and 36% in Q4. After controlling for age, gender, family affluence, school performance, television screen time, number of movies seen, sensation seeking and rebelliousness and smoking within the social environment (peers, parents and siblings), the adjusted ORs for having tried smoking in the entire sample were 1.3 (95% CI 1.1 to 1.5) for adolescents in Q2, 1.6 (95% CI 1.4 to 1.9) for Q3 and 1.7 (95% CI 1.4 to 2.0) for Q4 compared with Q1. The adjusted relationship between ever smoking and higher movie smoking exposure levels was significant in all countries with a non-linear association in Italy and Poland. CONCLUSIONS: The link between smoking in movies and adolescent smoking is robust and transcends different cultural contexts. Limiting young people's exposure to movie smoking could have important public health implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An Industry in Recession: The Italian Film Industry 1908-1909.
Film History. 1989, Vol. 3 Issue 4, p341-368. 28p.
The following is an excerpt from Cinema Muto Italiano; Vol. II, Industria e Organizzazione dello Spettacolo, 1905-1909 (Rome-Ban: Editori Laterza, 1981). All aspects of production, distribution, and exhibition in the early Italian cinema are shown to have been affected by the general economic recession of 1907-1908. Growing calls for municipal regulation and religious supervision were also characteristic of the Italian cinema in this period. Through the use of trade paper accounts, corporate reports, and governmental records, the article demonstrates the impact of the fiscal crisis in destabilizing undercapitalized enterprises and consolidating the industry under larger and stronger corporate entities. Simulating the Cinema Market: How Cross-Cultural Differences in Social Influence Explain Box Office Distributions.
Journal of Product Innovation Management; Mar2011, Vol. 28 Issue 2, p204-217, 14p, 5 Charts, 1 Graph
This paper uses a mixed method approach to show how cross-cultural differences in social influences can explain differences in distributions of market shares in different markets. First, we develop a realistic agent-based model that mimics the behavior of movie visitors and incorporates the social influences visitors exert on each other before and after visiting movies. The simulation results indicate that market inequalities are determined by social influences. In particular, we find that the social influence derived from the intended behaviors of others (coordinated consumption effect) has a stronger effect on market inequalities than the social influence derived from the past behavior of others (imitation effect). Second, we empirically validate the simulation results by conducting a cross-national survey that makes use of the cross-cultural differences in Hofstede's collectivism-individualism index as a proxy for the level of social influence present in a market. The results of this field study, performed in China, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, empirically show that social influences differ across countries, and that these differences can explain the apparent differences in the dispersion of movies' market shares. The empirical survey further contributes to understanding the role of social influence by revealing a U-shaped relationship between Hofstede's collectivism-individualism index score and the degree of social influence.
