The ninth edition of the Encylopaedia Britannica was the last to be published before the US recognized British copyrights. Charles Scribner's Sons published an authorized American edition in 25 volumes between 1878 and 1889. It was very similar to the British edition, but included some new articles specific to the United States. Authorized American editions with identical or near-identical content were also published by Little, Brown and Co., and by Samuel Hall.
Below we link to volumes of the Scribner's set at the Internet Archive. Additional Scribner's 9th editions volume scans may be found in this HathiTrust set.
See the main Encyclopaedia Britannica work page for other US 9th edition reprints (a number of which were not authorized by the British publishers, and may in some parts have notably different content from the "official" editions). That page also links to other editions of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
This is a "meta-book", which stitches together separate files elsewhere on the Web as they appeared in a previously published book. It is subject to removal if someone produces an integrated edition. If that happens, The Online Books Page will point to the integrated version.
