Advocate of Peace was the common name of a journal on peace and world affairs, as published by the American Peace Society in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Publication History

Advocate of Peace began publishing in 1834 as "American Advocate of Peace", absorbing an earlier serial, "The Calumet", the next year. The name shortened to "Advocate of Peace" in 1837. Other name variants used over the years include "The Advocate of Peace and Universal Brotherhood" (1846), "American Advocate of Peace and Arbitration" (1889-1892), "American Advocate of Peace" again (1892-1893), and "Advocate of Peace Through Justice" (1920-1932, not always consistently named). In 1932, the journal was renamed "World Affairs", the name under which it is published today. (Issues under the "World Affairs" name are listed separately.) Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1834-1836: JSTOR has volumes 1-2 published under the American Advocate of Peace name.
• 1837-1845: JSTOR has volumes 1-6 published under the Advocate of Peace name.
• 1846: JSTOR has the volume published under the Advocate of Peace and Universal Brotherhood name.
• 1847-1884: JSTOR has the next series under the Advocate of Peace name (which picks up as "volume 7" in 1847, and begins volume 1 of a new series in 1869). The issues run up to new series volume 15, issue 3 (June 1884).
• 1889-1892: JSTOR has volumes 51-54 under the American Advocate of Peace and Arbitration name. There appear to have been some additional issues published between 1884 and 1889, but that are not in JSTOR's archive. The volume numbering scheme was changed sometime in the mid-1880s.
• 1892-1893: JSTOR has volumes 54-55 under the American Advocate of Peace name.
• 1894-1920: JSTOR has volumes 56-82 under the Advocate of Peace name.
• 1920-1928: JSTOR has volumes 82-90 under the Advocate of Peace Through Justice name freely readable by all. JSTOR makes later volumes available only via subscription or other payment; see below for free copies.
• 1923: The Internet Archive has volume 85.
• 1924: The Internet Archive has volume 86.
• 1925: The Internet Archive has volume 87.
• 1926: The Internet Archive has volume 88.
• 1927: The Internet Archive has volume 89.
• 1928: The Internet Archive has volume 90.
• 1929: The Internet Archive has volume 91.
• 1930: The Internet Archive has volume 92.
• 1931-1932: The Internet Archive has volume 93 and the first issue of volume 94. After that issue, the publication changed its name to World Affairs; issues of that phase of the publication are listed separately.
