The Hawk-Eye began in June 1843, succeeding the earlier Hawk-Eye and Iowa Patriot, which had ended 12 weeks earlier. It officially became the Burlington Hawk-Eye in 1845. Later temporary titles reflected the paper's weekly or tri-weekly frequency and its absorptions of the Burlington Telegraph and later of the Burlington Gazette.
